Expertly blending traditional Mexico with creative interpretations of local and seasonal ingredients is the inspiration behind Mercadito restaurants. Spanish for "little market ", Mercadito is modeled after the markets chef Patricio Sandoval shopped at while growing up in his native Mexico. His muse is the cuisine of the southern region but when mixed with his own style he creates authentic dishes with an added flair.

Great food in a toght space – I have read the other reviews here, and sympathize with the disappointed few. The restaurant is small and I can understand that the management is antsy about the seating. We were lucky enough to come early and find a table quickly, even though we did have folks seated very close to us in a few minutes, something I don't mid, but some people do. The food is absolutely excellent! The drinks are very good too. We didn't find any problems with the service, and I am a stickler for service. There is a... read more
Baby tacos – If you like eating tacos in one bite, this is the place for you! This place has lots of bite-sized dishes. While I'm not going to say the portions are small, I am going to say that the portions are not big. That being said, they are also delicious and I grudgingly admit that they're worth it. The guacamole sampler is also great.
Strawberry Margaritas, Fish Tacos and Chicken Picadas – After having read a rave review in New York Magazine and receiving a recommendation from a waiter at a neighbohood restaurant, I ventured to Alphabet City w/ high hopes. My bf and I ordered way too much food, but wanted to be able to provide an accurate review of the place and provide good recos to our friends and fam. Strawberry Margaritas were amazing! They use fresh fruit, no juices. Avoid the guacamole, we tried the sampler (mango, pineapple, and regular), liked the... read more
Ugh – Great food, abominable service. Nothing's worse than having a fine meal, getting slightly tipsy on yummy margaritas, and then waiting 45 minutes for a check. It destroys the buzz! First, they told us that the "system" was down. Then, the manager finally arrived to fix it and he said "we are so backed up!" -- a lie. When you charge so much for those tiny tacos (even if they are good) you should be able to produce a check and get the machine to charge someone's credit card. I mean isn't that an important part to running ... read more
Anything but authentic Mexican food. – The only thing that was worth eating was their guacamole. The margaritas and service were pretty bad. If you decide to visit El Mercadito, I would recommend checking your bill before you pay. They tried to overcharge me twice - first when I paid for the drinks and then when I paid for the food. In addition, the back room is extremely loud making it very difficult to have a conversation. My suggestion: Go to a more authentic restaurant and enjoy better service and a nicer meal.
HEAVEN!!! – ercadito has to be one of the best restaurants in the city. The service was excellent and the food and drink was just as good. If you like Sangria, try the white wine Sangria. Food wise, try the three favor Guacamole. Cant say enough about it. As far as East Village dining goes, this is not one to miss. You wont be disappointed.
Fine, fun atmosphere... – The most personable staff including chef in a delightful place...Delicious food led by a chef who is not afraid to cross boundaries...An in-the-know place...
to die for mexican bites – When you long to be on a beach in Mexico with a fish taco in your hand and sand under your feet (which lets face it you do right now) this is the next best thing. Super fresh ceviche and small tacos will take you straight there. All the salsas and tortillas, down to the chips are prepared there by hand. The mango chipotle guac will have you licking the bowl and while the portions seem small at first, I followed the server's recommendations and left completely satisfied with the taste of these amazi... read more
walked out before trying the food – I walked into an empty restaurant at six on a weeknight and the host gave me a hard time about arriving before my other friend. I understand about not seating a party before everyone arrives, but the restaurant is small and I was the only person there. He also wanted me to call and find out where she was, nervous about people who had reservations. As if they were about to be swamped with 6:30 reservations. I did call my friend, but to tell her to meet me somewhere else.
