About this business

McSorley's is a Cooper Union landmark that first opened sometime around the Civil War. It is one of the oldest continuously operating bars in the city. McSorley's serves two kinds of beer, McSorley's Lager and McSorley's Cream Stock Ale, and they are served two mugs at a time. Inside, you'll find sawdust on the floor and historic bric-à-brac alongside photos and news clippings. The menu is simple, with appetizers such as hearty cheese plates. Just be sure to keep the pub's centuries-old motto in mind: "Be Good or Be G... read more

best bar ever – You'll never find a better, more friendly, worthwhile place to spend time drinking. For a real treat, try the mustard! McSorley's is absolutely the best bar in NYC, and probably the world. Don't get snotty there. Remember what you learn at McSorley's: "Ordinary people are as important as you, whoever you are."

Irish Eyes are Smiling – Best tap beer in NYC if not the US. Friendly atmophere. Good attitudes everywhere. If you don't like to drink, don't come. If you like peer pressure binge drinking, you'll have the time of your life and have never felt that way before. Cheers!

The Best!!! – McSorley's is an all 'round great place. The atmosphere is so unique, the beer is good (and I'm not a beer drinker), the other customers are fun to talk to - overall it's a NYC experience not to be missed!! Some of my greatest memories are from hanging out at this place...

Beers by the fistful – Any place that brings you beer by the dozen (several dozen) is surely an incredible place. And, with saw dust on the floor dont worry about spilling a little, although you wont want to waste a drop of their fine brew.

As good as it gets. – It was Joseph Campbell not Joseph Kennedy who wrote about this place's history. Everything about this place is historic - even the dust. A unique New York night would include McSorley's for drinks and Katz's for dinner. If you go to only one bar in NYC as a tourist or a native this should be the one. But do try to avoid the weekends.

Classic and totally New York – This bar is totally original and carries a sure feeling of history with it. Beers are 2 bucks each, or $3.50 if you get light and dark together. With the sawdust on the floor, this is a one of a kind that you shouldn't miss. Make it a one night event, or a lifetime hangout.

No music, all drink – The only negative aspects of this bar is the fact that it closes at 1AM, and since it is small, there is a wait to get in since the maximum # patrons policy is enforced. All in all, the beer (self-brewed) is actually very good, and kicks your a**.

First Stop – This is not your typical bar. Go here first! Drink great beer on the cheap. Get bent and then stumble to your next bar. They close early - 1am every day! If you are not power-drinking when you're here, then you're in the wrong bar. Two-fisted drinking is the norm. You don't have to be a frat boy, just drink like one. The beers are small so order a bunch (at least 2 a round for everyone in your group), tip, and thee will get served. If you're serious about drinking, then they'll be serious about serving you. Don'... read more

Old place, old school – What a fantastic bar. I've never been happier with having only two drink choices (light and dark). But it's a war to get a table. Women often love being at McSorley's because it's so fascinatingly old-boyish and hard to get into, but sometimes they are treated with veiled contempt. I feel bad about it sometimes, but it's gotta be the first bar I've ever seen where a guy who takes care of the staff is more likely to get a freebie than a girl who bats her eyes. Keep drinking if you want to keep the thea... read more
