Do not even drive by without confirmed reservations, this is the most popular Japanese eatery in town. It is considered by many to be the best sushi place in the US, and the best restaurant in the greater city of Los Angeles. Everything is fresh, delicious and very expensive, after all it is the workmanship of Nobu Matsuhisa. Rub elbows with the rich and famous, but leave your autograph book at home.

A Must For the Food Connoisseur – I always make it a point to take out-of-town guests to Matsuhisa for one of the greatest experiences in LA dining. The sushi here is excellent, however you can find sushi of the same caliber at other places in town such as Takao or Hamakawa. The reason you come here is for Nobu's masterful appetizers. I'd highly recommend the Blackened Cod with Mizo, which is considered the signiture dish here. Also, some of my other favorites are the New Style Sashimi, Toro Tartare, and the Rock Shrimp. Fabulous!!! – The best sushi I had in LA!! (of course the most expensive though.. :-) ) I have visited many nice Sushi restaurants in Tokyo but I think it's even better than some of the nicest ones. Also, all dishes are beautiful, creative and tasty. Interior design is very simple and not gorgeous but that makes cozy atmosphere. If you like more romantic mood, Nobu Malibu is recommended. They serve almost same dishes.
Cod in Miso!!! – I have to start with the cod in miso. This is the first time I tried miso with fish. The sweetness is amazing. The fish was so tender and looked perfect. Got some tempura after that and had to ask for some more of the miso sauce. The food was decent overall, but an order of the cod. New style sashimi is good for the novice. I don't think this place is as pricey as its reputation. Our bill was $90 for two out the door. The dishes come al a carte, steakhouse style for about $15, so you can get a variety. PLEASE – I went to this place because someone told me it was the best sushi they ever had..........It's clear this person new nothing about sushi. The food was average at best, very limited menu and for 4 of us to eat it cost $260. People in LA love to spend money to show out, even if the place is no good. Just because someone famous was seen there (like sheep following the flock) If you want great sushi and a good price go to pasadeana (sushi of napoles) no that is the best sushi I've ever had!
There are better – I used to loooove Matsuhisa. But after trying many other places, I finally have to come to the conclusion that it's become mediocre. The past couple of tomes, my sushi has been rubbery. I know, eat the cooked food, but even that was ok. Time to say bye, bye to Matsuhisa. For the best sushi in LA please try Hamasaku. It melts in your mouth, great service, fun rolls...
overpriced – I get so frustrated whenever I go to Matsuhisa that I've stopped going altogether. The sushi is not the star here, in my opinion. The quality of the sushi is good, but its not jaw-dropping like at rival places like Sasabune or Nozawa. However, the price for the sushi IS jaw-dropping. And the pieces of nigiri sushi are small, even by japanese standards. No wonder you don't see many japanese people eating here. It's just not a marvelous place to get top flight sushi. The "hot" food, however, is quite good...better... read more
paying for chef nobu not sushi – the food itself isnt heavenly especially considering the hefty price you are paying. service is marvelous and the crowd is pretentious. desserts and drinks are orgasmic though...i would highly recommend the pineapple sake.
Outstanding food! – The food at Matsuhisa is perfectly done and beautifully presented. The real problem is in the overall value of the meal. We tried the omakase and were delighted by the look and taste of the food, but MUCH less so by the portion size and price. $120 a person and we left hungry--seriously. It is a bit tight, but feels like a Sushi place should and the servers do as good a job as is possible in the cramped maze of tables. I would definitely go back and would recommend Matsuhisa to anybody that enjoys good su... read more
Pleasantly Surprised! – A friend and I found Matsuhisa by chance. We were surprised we were politely seated and pleasantly served without a reservation at this trendy, busy restaurant. The sushi was some of the freshest ever. And, we saw Mark Wahlberg... what a treat!
