Located along the Lockport section of the Erie Canal, this amazing underground boat ride is unique. Using a custom-built flat-bottom boat, visitors go on a half-mile trip through a man-made hydraulic raceway cut out of solid rock, the work of 19th-century genius Birdsill Holly— the man who gave the world the fire hydrant and zoned steam heat. Accompanied by a guide and trained operators, the 1 1/4-hour ride is thrilling and perfectly safe.

Though my 10 & 13 yo were determined that this was going to be boring, our tour guide Paige soon won them over with her stories of the canal, the factories, the people and the man-made cave. With smiles they'd agree that this was definitely one of the highlights of our trip to Western New York.

We had a lot of fun on our lantern tour, even though most of us died (some of us twice). Zach was a lot of fun, and knew how to deal with a nervous little girl. Have done it before and will do it again. Lake Effect Ice Cream ought to give him coupons with how much he talked about them at the start as we passed the shop!

Zac was very informative on the history of the canal and business that relied on the canal for power best part was zac let me drive the boat Due to a breakdown so will have to go again to strictly observe the cave
