Kingfish Restaurant, named after Huey Long, "the colorful, bigger than life man", is a restaurant that is also "bigger than life and very colorful. Kingfish is a one of a kind restaurant situated in downtown San Mateo in a historical 1920's art deco building. The restaurant features an exhibition Oyster bar, 3 full bars exhibiting a broad range of spirits and talented mixologists. There are 2 wine cellars stocked with some of the very hardest to find wines in the world, a Speakeasy lounge that always has an unparalleled live... read more

Service is Lacking – The food was amazing - rich and flavorful. The service, however, left a lot to be desired. While it was not outright bad, it was extremely mediocore. I had heard about this from friends as well, but wanted to give the place a chance. I am not sure I would come back to the San Mateo one. Perhaps the SF one will have better service?
Kingfish - a Disappointing Experience – My dining experience at Kingfish was very poor. Our table was so dimly lit, we could barely see our food. I ordered the "Vietnamese Gulf Shrimp Rolls" and received a single roll, cut in half. It was hard and cold and had obviously been in the fridge for a very long time. The steaks tasted fine except they were covered in a strange sweetish BBQ sauce that detracted from the taste of the meat. The plates looked really unappealing when they arrived - piece of meat on one side, starch on t... read more
Try it! – It's my favorite restaurant in the area. A seafood lover's paradise and the wine cellar is a beautiful touch to the decor. Loved the Oyster Bar too.
Great ambience, so-so food – Hubby & I were very impressed with the decor at Kingfish. We had a couple of drinks at the bar, and hubby said that the $3 he paid for a Coors Light was relatively cheap. The food, however, was overpriced. I ordered the filet & lobster tail which was pretty good, but definitely not worth the $37 I paid for it. Hubby had the seared tuna which was tasty, but expensive. Don't get me wrong, the food was fine, just not worth the $ we paid for it. If you don't mind paying a premium to eat at a trendy p... read more
Great Food, Horrible Service – I've been to Kingfish many, many times and I keep going back because they have great food. However, the service is downright bad, so don't expect much in that category. I enjoy dining at a nice restaurant and taking my time, especially with family/friends. Kingfish is in no hurry at all to seat you, take your order, serve you, or take your money! Everything is very, very slow, but if you are with friends and have had a few drinks, this probably won't matter to you. The last time I was there the... read more
Great Food, Slow Service – Tuna Tartare was just ok...decent selection of oysters. Crab cocktail wasn't bad either. I've been here ta handful of times already but wouldn't return on purpose. The service was a bit slow and unattentive.
It's Okay! – Upon reading the first few reviews, I had grave concerns going into this restaurant. However, it was not as bad as written. Service and food were average. The etoufee was OK. Not sure if I am correct in my assessment, but the etoufee I had in New Orleans (as explained by the server out there) was not tomato based like the one that I had at this restaurant. Prices were moderate. The only thing that I can say about the menu is that it is very, very eclectic.
Editorial Review – The Peninsula meet the Big Easy at this festive Cajun eatery in downtown San Mateo.
Disappointed – After looking at their wonderful menu online, I must say that we were disappointed with King Fish. While their selection and descriptions were fantastic, the execution fell far below our expectations. The "best mussels this side of the 92" was just flat out terrible as we had some spoiled mussels in the bunch. The etouffe was bland, and both the filet and the porterhouse pork chops were dry. What saved our dinner was the spectacular service.
Kingfish has a 3.8 star rating with 225 reviews.
