Opened in the summer of 2006 to replace the aging University Hall, the University of Virginia now holds its basketball games, concerts and other events in this 16,000 seat arena. Built almost entirely from a private donation, it takes its name from a former alumni, and not the Revolutionary War naval hero. It shouldn't be hard for fans to find, since it's right across the street from the old facility.

traffic and parking is frustrating at John Paul Jones. I've been there for two concerts and parking was hard to find. For the first event (Elton John) - Once I found somewhere I then had quite a walk to get to the arena. The second event (21 Pilots) had us waiting in our car for 45 minutes after the event so traffic could clear. The arena itself was nice.
I was very disappointed with this venue. I expected a town with a successful basketball team to be able to accommodate traffic better than it did. It should not take 1 hour 45 mins to go about one mile. I was also irritated that had to purchase a bottled water to be put in a cup without a lid....not a good idea with jumping and dancing teens. Many were over heating. Will seriously consider if we will attend another concert here.
The staff was great, people were friendly at the concessions, parking, security, etc... serving water in cups with no lids was weird, but I'm sure there's a reason. I guess my biggest complaint was the complete lack of cell / wifi service. Text messages between my daughter, wife and I took 30-45 minutes to send - and forget about social media. ATT is our provider, I literally lost all service the minute I stepped in the arena. Major bummer as I couldn't post or live stream about the amazing 21 Pilots show! Definitely need to... read more
I took my son to see 21 pilots for his first concert and it was great. I've been to a lot of concerts so my only complaint is that you were only allowed 4 beers . I stayed at a hotel right next to the arena. So we walked . I think I'm able to drink more than 4 beers geez .
Sound in section 314 was horrible. 3rd tier seats were not worth the exorbitant prices. Great lighting and effects and stage visibility, but also couldn't see the screens beside the stage.
Twenty one pilots show was fabulous and they rocked the show!!!! If I could attend more of their shows ... I would! The venue was great in terms of cleanliness but was not equipped to handle the crowd of a sold out concert. My suggestions for a better experience next time.. eat before you go... someplace else! Arrive early else you will not be able to park. I wish the venue management would notice that the folks are in line getting drenched in the Freezing rain and please open the doors a few minutes early!!! If they charge ... read more
I saw Twenty One Pilots last night and the arena itself was great. My major complaint is that it took 2 hours to move 1.4 miles down Emmet Street to Massie Road. Once on the college campus, I asked 3 different security guys where the prepaid parking garage was. Received 3 different answers. When I finally got to it, they were full! I now have a prepaid parking pass that is useless. Ended up parking .8 miles away after all that. I would think Charlottesville would be more helpful with the traffic. I go to Jiffy Lube in Bristo... read more
