Started w/ roasted farm carrots and the "barbacoa" smoky mezcal marg. Main was a rich pesto pasta with trout. Finished with the local Capitol Reef peach cobbler ala mode. Service was personable and excellent. I ate too much, but what can you do when you drive 7hrs for such a meal! Already looking forward to the next visit!
RecommendedWe stumbled across this food gem while out exploring for the day. The Food was unique and absolutely delicious. The grounds were filled with flowers and the trees around the outdoor patio sprinkled with hummingbirds. Such a delightful experience. Highly recommend. Marty and Jackie Travel is our thing 😁

We went here in 2013 and this September we're going back West on a 6000-mile drive, a few hundred of which are to come back to this place. It's that good.
Fantastic food, beautiful restaurant
The biscuits are awesome and the dinner portion of the “Jennchilada” (one chicken and one veggie) was excellent. Tried the meatloaf (husband’s) and the chicken (Sister’s) and all entries were great! The lemony mashed potatoes were wonderful and the two different sides of quinoa were also fantastic!!! Wait staff was “over the top”!!! Atmosphere was comfortable and casual.
We loved dining at Hell's Backbone, as well as the philosophy behind this backcountry delight. I also loved the drive up and beyond, and am extremely disturbed by the Trump administration's decision to gut Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument to allow mining and destruction to take place in and around the area where this wonderful establishment is located.
So delighted to have stumbled upon this wonderful place. We stopped by at 5 pm last Monday and were treated warmly and casually to a stand-out meal - organic, fresh, balanced, delicious, beautiful. Particularly impressed that the restaurant shares its most basic recipes with all. I just tried the Blue-Ribbon black pepper biscuit recipe back home in Berlin, Germany (basically sea-level - Hell's Backbone Grill is at almost 7000 ft) - one bite brings me right back to this immeasurable place. Grateful.
