I decided, several years ago, to focus on treatment of arthritic hips and knees. Where appropriate, minimally invasive approaches are used, including the anterior approach to the hip. The focus of my team is to provide quality, appropriate, care to patients of all age groups and demographics. The hospital at which I operate has an excellent total joint program with outstanding Health Grades results.

Does Doctor do bloodless surgery?
I had anterior total hip replacement performed by Dr. Gunnlaugson on December 5, 2016 and had made excellent recovery from the surgery. He has good bedside manners and is very pleased with the results of my surgery. No more pain.
After a construction accident 30 years ago, I had 6 operations on my right knee, with 3 screws, & a staple in my right knee. I had surgeries at UPMC Pittsburgh, Arlington national hospital, & John Hopkin's. After 30 years & severe pain that became intolerable, it was time for a total knee replacement. It was nice to have it here at home, & not have to travel 2-4 hrs. to the "big city". Dr. Gunnlaugson managed everything including the pain very well. In 1 month I was walking 1 1/4 mile 2 x day.
From the very beginning Dr. Gunnlaugson's office staff & nurses were so considerate, friendly & helpful. I had an x-ray and consultation with Dr. Gunnlaugson & we all decided I needed a knee replacement. I have been having problems for over 4 yrs. I was scheduled for a Total Care class across the street at Windber Hospital. On that day everything was explained as to what would happen on the day of the surgery. There isn't enough room to tell you how wonderful everything went.
Dr. Gunnlaugson made me feel at ease from my first Docters appointment to my last , I felt like a family member . He was there first thing in the morning after my total hip replacement. I was up walking that morning and had tremendous improvement and increased mobility each day. I used a walker for 3 days, cane 2 weeks and cane assist for another week! I then started to walk on my treadmill slow but without PAIN ! I am very Grateful to Dr. GUnny. MYpain is gone and I am getting back to normal
I am 73 years old and had a total knee replacement in August 2016 and have made an excellent recovery. Dr. Gunnlaugson was understanding of my needs and explained the procedure well. His assistant, Mike, is also a great person and they are always willing to explain things in detail and answer all of your questions. They both have many years of experience and I would not hesitate to recommend them. Also, their pre-op program is excellent and all the necessary tests are done at one location.
Dr. Gunnlaugson is patient and listens to what problems you are having. Very good bed side manner, kind and compassionate. Made sure you we're comfortable after your surgery. Does not rush you in his office with a follow up visit, makes sure he answers all your questions you may have about the care you need to do to getting back to normal like your good knee. Blessings to you for all that you have done!!!
Dr. Gunnlaugson what a great Dr. He and his staff both listen to what you have to say and they give great advice, my surgery went great and so far the after care has been the same
