From the bizarre name of Genghis Cohen, you'd think this was an Asian kosher delicatessen. You'd be wrong. The menu is strictly Chinese (besides the coleslaw & pickles) and it's good. The crowd is a mix of those who come for the Szechuan pork, and younger music types who'll either perform or patronize the acoustic music room that's just off the entrance. Although it depend on who's playing, you can usually get into the music room with a nominal fee. Come for the food, but stay for the music.

What a Find! – My wife and I have lived in this neighborhood for just over a year and have driven past Genghis Cohen countless times. The other weekend we went for a walk and decided to give it a try. What a shocker!! This restaurant is by far the best Chinese we have had in LA. The atmosphere is great and the food is excellent. We started with the shrimp dumplings and then I had the Crackerjack shrimp, my wife had the Orange Peel chicken and we shared a veggie fried rice. The shrimp was perfectly crispy and the sauce was gr... read more
Good Americanized Chinese Food – My wife and I have been here a few times. We live in the neighborhood. The restaurant is cool and the food is fine but nothing to get extremely excited about. This IS NOT authentic Chinese food but Americanized Chinese food. When was the last time your ordered a Chinese lamb dish ? But, the spicy garlic lamb was good. We also ate the orange peel chicken. It tasted like fried chicken with ketchup and a couple of orange peels thrown in it. The craker jack shrimp dish was tasty as well as the fr... read more
My favorite restaurant in LA – My husband and I have been going to Genghis Cohen for the most wonderful Chinese food in LA since 1993. Our favorites are the spicy cilantro shrimp, queen chicken with broccoli and the rockin Mai Tai's! This is hands down, the best meal in LA. The service is consistently good and friendly. A great place to get together with friends and enjoy a perfect meal. Our only issue with the place ever was once when the mgr put a reserved sign on our table before our check came - it made us feel uncomfort... read more
Best Chinese Food in Town! – This is my favorite Chinese restaurant in all of Los Angeles. The service is fantastic, the food is wonderful. I like the restaurant atmosphere, and the option to listen to live music next door. We realy enjoyed the black peppered beef dish (a genghis favorite), and the crackerjack shrimp - which is sweet and spicy. I absolutely love shrimp - the shrimp friend rice was also excellent. Overall, I highly recommend this place - the food is top notch! Great dining experience too - nice big booths, di... read more
Low-key Chinese restaurant/bar with live singer-songwriters and an industry-heavy crowd. – In Short As the name implies, this live music venue and restaurant features a Mongolian-Chinese menu that caters to the largely Orthodox Jewish neighborhood. The '80s-inspired dining room is decorated with etched glass, black-vinyl booths and gray walls. This candlelit space serves as a nice way station before entering the bare-bones theater, where pew-like seating and folk musicians are the norm. After 10pm, the crowd is purely young ... read more
Genghis...once a week just isn't enough! – My girlfriend and I have been dining at Genghis Cohen about once a week for almost two years now. The food is great...I especially recommend the Maine Scallops Hunan Style, the fried pork potstickers, the three flavor sizzling rice soup, and the Salt Shrimp in the Shell. The Mai Tai is one of the best I've had. Dinner for two with four cocktails, and appetizer and two entrees come to about $65. A GREAT deal, especially in Hollywood.
Great Food w/NY Flair – We really enjoy dining at Genghis Cohen. Everything I've eaten there has been good. My favorites are the Gold Shrimp and the Green Beans. Who would know that green beans could taste so good and hold their own as an entree. The dining atmosphere is pleasant, and the wait staff are attentive and nice. Great place to have a meal, and the music room on the other side is a good place to check out some local talent. Highly recommended.
Best Chinese Food I've ever had! Nice quirky menu. The bar itself seemed small - didn't go into the music venue but the restaurant ROCKS!!!
Vegetarian Choices – Wonderful food with many choices for the veggie dinner. I'd always wanted to try lettuce leaf wrap but usually it's a meat dish - not here, it's veggie and delicious. The prices are very reasonable too, the bar makes a mean pina colada.
