The research library alone is worth the annual membership fee. Additional benefits include the semi-annual seminars presented by the top experts in genealogical research, the monthly Insider newsletter and quarterly Bulletin, and the incredible resources available through the special interest groups and other special events. Totally run by volunteers so the entire membership fee goes into resources.
Great place to learn about researching your family.
I have been a member of GFO of and on for about 6 years. The membership is so reasonable and the resources so incredible. Every time I think I have tracked down every reference and document - I find another record series, series of publications or a fellow genealogist - and I make great discoveries in my research!
GFO is a great place to research your ancestors. They subscribe to the World Edition of Ancestry, Fold3, Find my Past, and lots of other good databases, including a newspaper database. And there are over 39,000 items listed on their online catalog. Helpful volunteers are available to assist with your research. If you are in Portland, this is a "must visit" place.
It's nice to be able to get help with my family tree. Other GFO members share information, offer tips and help me get around my brick walls. Just today I learned about using Google to find historical newspapers online in any state. Ongoing classes and seminars with national speakers also help expand my knowledge. It's a big plus that all of GFO's library holdings (36,000+) are online.
This is a wonderful location to do your genealogy research, regardless or where your family line takes you. They have great staff that will help you with resources and on how to use various programs available to help in your research. GFO also offer great classes and study groups that can give you insight you won't get any other place in the Portland area. Please stop by or visit their website for more information.
Great organization and good place to do your genealogical research.
Ongoing classes are THE BEST. So much to learn with EXPERTS who happen to be our own locals!
