Experience pizza bliss in a slice of hand-tossed, fresh baked, cheesy New York-style pizza pie. Get a pizza to go, if you cannot stop at a slice or two. This hole-in-the-wall pizzeria, a longtime Northwest Portland landmark, lends a neighborly feel to the art of pizza inhaling. Lucky patrons will find an open table outside on the sidewalk. Beverages such as beer, soda and sparkling water are available. Peruse the eclectic decor or people watch while munching on slice number two or three.

Grease Bomb – In short, Domino's has better pizza. No, rephrase that: Anywhere has better pizza. Unless you like your pizza so grease soaked that you can hardly discern what the toppings are, I would recommend you spend your money elsewhere. I have been dragged into this restaurant on multiple occasions, each being just as miserable as the other. Bad food, bad atmosphere, bad food.
My Favorite Pizza by the SLICE!! – I have been eating pizza by the slice here for 9 years and I love it! What I like most about this place is the layed back atmosphere, and the consistency of the pizza. It never changes. It somewhere different, has a style all it's own. And you really can't beat the prices! If you haven't tried it, you may just be misssing out!
Excellent Pizza – This is in response to previous reviewers who have felt the need to mention that they have lived in New York: Who cares? Millions upon millions of people have lived in New York and, suprisingly, have different opinions about things like how pizza should taste. Does having lived in New York make one an arbiter of good taste? No. Furthermore, as anyone who has eaten pizza in New York City knows, there is a wide variety of pizza styles and an even wider variety of pizza quality. Escape from New York Pizza is g... read more
not at all what NY pizza tastes like.... yuck! – I just copied/pasted this review which describes my experience to a T. I, too, lived in NY for a while. NYC pizza is AMAZING, and when I moved to NW 23rd I was estatic that there was a pizzeria with NY style pizza. Needless to say, I was very disappointed. Rude workers and really gross pizza. When they say "Escape from NY Pizza" they really mean get as far away from NY pizza as you can. I only live a stone's throw away, but I'll never go back. Great food, poor location – My favorite pizza. Simple and filling comfort food at its best. The only negative thing to say about this place is its location. Very hard to get to because there is almost never any parking to be found nearby. I hope that oneday they will expand and have some east/westside suburban locations, so, we don't have to come downtown to get good pizza. All you find in suburbia is Pizza Hut, Dominos, and Papa Murphy's (gag!)
Leave your attitude and credit card at home! – Great laid back place to hang out, grab a couple slices of great pizza. Simple pizza from escape is actually better than competitors' so called gourmet pizza!
Great pizza, what more do you want?? – Just a hole in the wall on trendy NW 23rd. You know its good if there is a line outside the door. Had a slice of pepperoni- very nice flavor, great crust. Would definitely brave the traffic and crowds for more!
A traditional slice to satisfy the New Yorker at heart. – In Short Get in line, order at the large counter and grab a stool at this no frills pizzeria. The Statue of Liberty stands over the oven, which has a kitsch collection at its base, including the shrunken head of Mario Cuomo. You'll find the basics: pepperoni, onions, olives, green peppers, mushrooms and sausage. With authentic New York-style thin crust, thick sauce and just the right amount of cheese, this joint proves some things are best kept simple.
One of the places I miss the most – I lived in Portland for 10 years, and Escape From NY was one of my favorite places. Sorry all you New Yorkers who like to complain...I've eaten pizza there too and Escape is just as good. Ok so the attitude is a little put-on, but they are making an effort to make it real for us east-coasters. Now that I'm back here, I wish I could escape from NY and get some pizza in Portland. Great place to hang out with friends!!
