I have been seeing Dr. Patel for over two years now, so I can say with authority that she has zero emotional intelligence and absolutely no self awareness of social cues, and on top of that, clearly doesn't listen to a word her patients say. I have never been treated by a doctor or mental health professional the way she treated me. Dr. Patel is not a good shrink. Fortunately, she's cutting down her practice, so the good news is: she's cutting down her practice. The bad news? Fewer shrinks in DC to monitor your psychotropic meds.
I really struggle with Dr. Patel and her business practices. She does not listen to her patients and can be exceedingly difficult if you have any questions or concerns about her treatment plan. She made me feel uncomfortable on several occasions with comments made about my situation. Her receptionist is very rude and makes it difficult to manage the frequent billing, scheduling, and prescription issues Dr. Patel creates. I wish I had read the reviews before choosing her and before I recommended her to others.
If I could give 10 stars I would! Dr. Patel is a caring, supportive and excellent psychiatrist. She recently helped us navigate a crisis with my daughter. She truly cares about her patients and their families. Unlike many psychiatrists, Dr. Patel is very relatable and very warm. I would recommend her without qualification.
Don’t go to Patel. She makes her judgement about you before asking any questions. She only tries old medications with severe side effects and if they do not work, she gives you a weird diagnosis. She then took me of all my medication and stopped seeing me. Patel doesn’t take the whole person in context. I suffered a TBI where I couldn’t work. Dr. Patel yelled at me over the phone when I told her I was unsure about taking a new medication she had prescribed after being told by my pharmacist that it would interact with something she'd already prescribed previously. She then threatened to take me off her patient list. I literally had to sit there, crying and attempting to de-escalate the situation. Beyond that, she's inattentive and doesn't seem to remember any details from previous sessions.
Kind and thoughtful, eager to treat the whole person. Suggests treatments beyond medication. Professional office staff. Never had to wait. Definitely recommend.
Dr. Patel can and will listen, My experience with her has always been positive. I was referred to her through my general physician and was impressed with her guidance. For the last 4 years I have been meeting with her, it has been beneficial for me to know and learn that I am in control of my treatment. Appointments are incredibly brief and she spends some of the time texting on her phone while I’m speaking to her. Today upon paying my bill over the phone my emailed receipt included the patient information (drivers licenses and insurance information) of 7 other patients! After today I do not plan on seeing Dr. Patel again.
