Cloister Cafe

About this business

Despite not being known for its food, this East Village restaurant and bar has been a neighborhood favorite for over 20 years. Stained glass windows collected from churches around the world line the walls in the cozy indoor seating area of Cloister Cafe. Outside, a splendid garden complete with a fountain and tiny overhead lights makes for a perfect romantic late night snack or nightcap. Their desserts and hot drinks are tasty and decadent. It is also a great choice for weekend brunch. Popular entrees include filet mignon, c... read more

Worst food ever – Avoid this place like the plague!! Forget the ambiance nonsense. The food was awful - apparently microwaved. In fact, you get cheap substitutions in place of what's on the menu. I ordered Talapia with Risotto... got the fish alright, but with Uncle Ben's brown rice. And for this you you pay a premium. And they have the nerve to include 18% gratuity for shoddy service. When you see this place, take a peek inside for the ambiance and go elsewhere for the food.

Nice place for a hookah – I just came here for a drink and do some hookah smoking. There is a nice garden outside so it's scenic. The service wasn't terribly good.

Terrible service and a gratuitiy – Went here Saturday night to grab a drink, enticed by the unusual decor. Waited FOREVER to even get our order taken, or a drink delivered, only to realize after they had run my credit card that we'd been assessed a gratuity of over 16% on a party of three! Didn't feel like trying to find the waitress again to mention it but I will NEVER return - and the sad part is that even with crappy service, we would have left more than the grat. Debating disputing the charge with my credit card company ... read more

dreadful service – Without a doubt the worst restaurant service I've ever experienced. My colleagues and I, all in the restaurant business, are wary about complaining about service. However, we were made wait 20 minutes on a quiet Sunday night for a waitress, who then neglected to offer us bread or water, and brought wrong drinks (which we were charged for). One meal failed to arrive until well after the rest of us had finished. Nobody came to check on us. My steak and my friend's filet mignon were cooked at wrong temperatur... read more

Not recommended - no service – This place to eat is not worth enduring the inattentive service and management. As a small group of four eating there once, we had literally to keep chasing down our server all evening. Another time, we wanted to chance it again, bringing a very large party. When we called a week ahead of time to confirm the reservation, they seemed quite unconcerned about the fact that they had no record of our reservation and could not honor it. In fact, they insisted that all large dinner reservations includ... read more

Editorial Review – Enjoy classic Italian dishes in a lush, vibrant outdoor garden in the heart of the city.

Worst food and service I've ever experienced in NY – I recently came here with my boyfriend and his family and experienced the worst food and service in all of NYC. They screwed up all of our drink orders and the food was worse than mediocre: fish was mushy, side vegetables looked like leftover salad sticks cooked in a microwave, and none of us were able to finish our dishes. I rarely write reviews but felt compelled to share this experience so people know what they're getting into when they come here--cute garden but awful ... read more

Hookah In The Garden – Unsuspecting garden tucked away only to open up to a spacious and leafy outdoor seating. Prime location for distressed travelers wanting to relax in the summertime with friends and hookah. Waitresses are aloof and require tagging for service; Not ideal for a smooth first date. Graceful garden, service contradicts.
