Despite not being known for its food, this East Village restaurant and bar has been a neighborhood favorite for over 20 years. Stained glass windows collected from churches around the world line the walls in the cozy indoor seating area of Cloister Cafe. Outside, a splendid garden complete with a fountain and tiny overhead lights makes for a perfect romantic late night snack or nightcap. Their desserts and hot drinks are tasty and decadent. It is also a great choice for weekend brunch. Popular entrees include filet mignon, c... read more

great sunday brunch – I really enjoyed this place - boyfriend and I bartend on weekends and it was a perfect place for brunch on Sunday. The spread was great - good coffee, fruit, big portions - and we were not rushed at all.
A Garden Oasis In an Alley – My friend in the East Village discovered this place that he said looked amazing and had to take me to. I loved the ambiance: the grapevines, the fountains - it was very wonderful. The ginger/soy sauce on the tofu dish I had was really good and added something special to the bites of salmon my date shared with me. Upon leaving I felt like I was leaving a secret garden and stepping back into the urban jungle. Definitely worth a return trip.
User review by gladriel27 – This place looks great with a courtyard fountain, but once inside we were seated in folding chairs that were too low for the table and shania twain was playing. The waitress nearly lost the cork in our wine, which it turned out had gone bad due to improper storage. After that we decided not to risk it with the food and cancelled our order to go down the street for tibetian food (which was good).
Award for worst service – This restaurant has the worst service I have ever experienced. The waiters didn't speak English, the one that did couldn't get the order right, then when we asked to speak to the manager they told us that there was no manager and that they were all equally in charge. We left the restaurant hungry and very upset.
