Carmine’s On Penn

4.3

About this business

Make reservations well in advance or you may never experience this spirited little neighborhood bistro that specializes in inexpensive, larger than life, family-style Italian entrees. No matter what night this place is always jammed and offers a large enclosed patio year round. Eggplant Parmesan makes for a wonderful main course, as do the many traditional pasta dishes. The extensive wine list offers a wide variety of reasonably priced selections. Most of the entrees serve two or more people. Valet parking available.

Excellent food, large servings – I went on a Sunday night around 6pm and the restaurant wasn't crowded yet, although it had filled up by the time I left. They're not kidding when they say portions serve two to four people. The sausage and peppers appetizer was delicious, the pear salad was fantastic, and the clam linguini was great. The wait staff was friendly. Our water glasses were never empty. Our waiter also did an excellent job in explaining the menu and making food and wine recommendations. However, it was a bit on the... read more

Absolutely the best Italian (and not a chain!) – This is a family owned restaurant with amazing italian food. Yes, because the food is sooooo good you need to plan ahead. There will be long lines. There will be no space at the bar. Big groups of people will have to wait to get in. BUT, the food is ABSOLUTELY the best. Been to Italy 3-4 times and this is IT.

best family style italian – I really like Carmine's, I've been there 3 times. I prefer it over Buca (been there 5-6 times) and Maggiano's (been there 2 times) for family style Italian food. The prices on food and wine were reasonable, and the food was good. It is crowded, so I would recommend reservations.

Hip crowds flock to this neighborhood trattoria for piles of pasta. – In Short Surrounded by houses, this small restaurant seems almost out of place. But with numerous accolades and a loyal following, reservations are a must. Cool crowds hang out at the bar, while groups of friends and romantic couples fill the dining room. Everything is priced and served family-style, with portions feeding four. The pasta Montana yields a mountain of giant penne noodles with juicy chicken, asparagus spears and sun-dried tomatoes in a rich, ... read more

Follow Up – PLEASE READ ENTIRE REVIEW: THIS IS A FOLLOW UP T MY PRIOR REVIEW. I have been going to Carmines for over 14 years, i do not live close and my wife and I would drive over 40 minutes to enjoy what was the best Italian in town at least once a week.. New ownership has taken over, and here are my opinions. 1- At first we thought it was growing pains going through a change, food portion have decreased, prices have increased. 2- Quality is way down, I guess when oyu skrimp on ingredients, the flavor reflects the attitud... read more

Go to Carmine's – For me, a trip to Denver isn't complete unless I've eaten at Carmine's. The food is excellent. It has a unique and enjoyable neighborhood ambience. Because it's typically busy, however, I recommend making reservations. Though even if you have to wait, there is a bar next door with an equally comfortable neighborhood-like atmosphere where you can have a drink and prepare yourself for the excellent food to come. While I love the atmosphere at Carmine's, I would not recommend it for occasions when conversation... read more

Good luck getting in... – OK, I've known for a long time that this place is too "in demand." I put a group together for dinner and called about a reservation. They couldn't give us one, but said if we showed up at 7, we would have a table for 6 no later than around 7:45. Sounded fine to us. But, when we arrived, they told us no chance until 9 or 9:30. Ridiculous. My advice, if you don't have a reservation, forget it. I'm glad they are so successful, but I'm not going to even bother trying to go back to this place. It's too C... read more

Best Italian in Denver!! – The food, service, and atmosphere at Carmine's has been outstanding every time I've been there. Well worth the wait (reservations recommended) and the prices are reasonable. The staff is attentive and friendly. The food is to die for. Reading some of the other reviews, I am shocked at how many people are disappointed! Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but don't let some of these whiney reviews stop you from giving this restaurant a try. Everyone I know loves this place.
