About this business

Editorial fromThe line begins almost before the restaurant even opens. This small, unassumingly decorated restaurant knows how appealing it is since it is audaciously titled Burma Superstar. Burmese cuisine, as authentic as you can get it stateside, is…

Restaurant Superstar – I'd been hearing rave reviews from friends, and I finally managed to make it over to Burma Superstar. This was a great introduction to Burmese food. Service was excellent, and the prices were very affordable for lunch.

The ultimate comfort food – This is one of my top ten all-time favorites. The wait can be horrific, but it is well worth your time once you sit down. Servers, although incredibly busy, are warm and wonderful, and they really know their menu. My usual ordering routine goes something like: Burma Cooler (Beer, lemon, and ginger) Tea Leaf Salad (Earthy, spicy, and full of texture) Samusa Soup (Spicy, rich, crunchy... my number one craving on a bad day. And I still have no idea how something this rich could possibly be vegetarian... read more

Wonderful – This place is a neighborhood treasure. The food is delicious and the staff is helpful. The only short coming of this restaurant is the ambiance. But seriously, this is some of the best food the city has to offer.

Best food ever...seriously! – There are no words to describe how good this place is. It has by FAR the best food I've ever eaten. Get the tea leaf salad (amazing). Drink a mango smoothy or a ginger lemonade. Have some coconut rice. Get samosas, or even the samosa soup...to die for. About the notorious wait, it's true. But like people say, put your name in before you go, or go across the street and get some coffee or drinks, and set your mobile phone on high. Wait it out--it's worth it. As for the service, the place is busy a... read more

Not all it used to be – Everybody knows about the infamous wait. A couple years ago, the wait was worth every second, with interesting and excellent food offerings. Lately, the preparation of the dishes has come across as being only average. The service has been spotty, with a lengthy wait before ordering, and dinner dishes arriving over a 10 minute period rather than all at once. The fame and reputation showered upon Burma Superstar was once entirely deserved. Lately, it's shine has faded.

Can you say over-rated? – This place is extremely yuppie and overpriced for the food they serve. We had the Rainbow salad and it had a very strong taste of burnt shallots. The vegetable curry was horrible and bitter. We also ordered coconut rice for our curry and only after the cury cam to the table did our server tell, us they did not have any cocont rice today. This was a huge disappointment...

Highly Recommended – Whenever I go to the Richmond, I always eat at Burma Superstar. I'm sure there are other good restaurants nearby, but I always end up at Burma because it's the perfect intimate neighborhood restaurant with wonderful dishes that are hard to find elsewhere. As a vegetarian I find the Superstar noodles, sauteed pea shoots with garlic, tea leaf salad, coconut rice, and samusas to be delicious beyond words. Ginger lemonade and sangria are very tasty. Yes, the service can be slow at times but the staff is cons... read more

Pretty good food but service a bit weak – I took my sister on a wed night at about 8 and we barely wiated 5 minutes to get a table. The food arrived pretty quickly and was quite good. We ordered a shrimp dish, fiery chicken with tofu and okra and egg curry. The okra and egg curry was not what we expected but the shrimp and chicken was good and had the right amount of spiciness. The only thing we were a bit disappointed with was the level of attention. We thought they could have come by to check in on how we were doing or fil... read more

the wait is INTENSE but totally worth it. if you show up and there is a massive list, just put down your name and hit the nearest bar, the staff will call you when your table's ready. the food is absoluting AMAZING! i highly suggest the tea leaf salad (you can't get this dish ANYWHERE else) as well as the spicy chicken with basil (DELICIOUS) EVERY DISH i've had there i have loved. and please save room for dessert. The coconut custard (like deep fried coconut egg rolls) topped w/ coconut ice cream is out of this world. and th... read more
