Great D.C. area bike trail. Very much a new-school flow trail, with some natural features mixed in. Not a lot of vertical, but really fun terrain with some jumps and technical rocks/roots. Has an expert area, as well as a blue section. 14mile loop for the expert. Extremely well maintained and managed.
I call this a good city trail but it pales in comparison to more natural trails that exist in he west. Something drives me crazy about working my butt off just to find that all I am doing is zigzagging across the terrain. Sure they build in all the technical stuff that you hope to find in nature but I prefer the joy of getting somewhere cool.
Fountainhead Park has one of the best mountain bike trails I have visited in my life. Challenging sports, well marked and with 3 loops that allow for different levels of riders to have fund together. The first and easier loop is the green. It's short and not much technical. The second (blue) is longer, but also relatively simple, with a few sports where you can practice more advanced skills. We drove from Pittsburgh to ride the mountain bike trails. Trails were great, well maintained, and marked clearly. We loved the challenges on the black and double black loops. We had a lot of fun and are looking forward to visiting again.
