A Mediterranean-Italian B.Y.O.B. with plenty of culinary pleasures and thrills. – In Short With so many great Italian B.Y.O.B.s popping up, La Baia could do more to win over its customers. Still, the food is of consistently solid quality. The menu is largely regional Italian cuisine with flourishes of Mediterranean cooking. Mozzarella La Baia pairs sliced discs of the mild cheese with grilled peppers, basil and tomato slices. The standout entree is a salmon filet crusted with walnuts, a surprise of subtle flavors and texture... read more
Friendly, cozy... – A place where everybody knows your name... that is if you're krafty enough to get in their good graces. Reasonably priced food... love that it's BYOB... and the tiramisu really is one of the best I've ever had.
Soooo snug – I've been to many of Philly's BYOS, which are usually very small. This one seemed much more unpleaasantly crowded than any other. We were so close to out neighbors that we had to slump over and shift the table to let them move. The food was ok, but I'd go elsewhere to avoid the crush and the none-to-charming service.
learn some manners! – The food was very good for the price, however, prepare to answer to commands most pets would raise their tails at and walk away from. Upon walking into the restaurant for a romantic dinner, we were told to "go sit over there" with a flimsy wave of a finger. We were rushed to remove our coats and were told the specials while we were still getting seated. The chairs were unstable (leg was broken). Our water glasses were empty for 80% of the meal only to be refilled when we paid the check and were about to... read more
Want some attitude with your fettuccine? – As mentioned in previous reviews, I have never been treated more poorly at a restaurant than at La Baia. Our party called ahead to say that we would be late for a reservation -- the restaurant could have declined to seat us or made us wait, but they said it was no problem. Then our waiter harassed us at the table for being "disrespectful" towards the restaurant and its other clientele by not being on time. We were told repeatedly to "hurry up" to accommodate other diners even though... read more
Great Little Restaurant with great little prices! – Thank goodness we did not heed some of the negative reviews. We had a great dinner last night. Try the grilled calamari first. They do a great job on veal piccatta as well. We like BYOB since it helps keep the cost of dinner out at a reasonable amount. Our service was very good and we reached the theater early following dinner. The best part of the meal was the delicious warm crusty bread served with olive oil and balsamic vinegar. Wonderful! We can't wait to go back.
Really cramped, but a ton of fun – This place is really small, really cheap, and really good. I once came here with my girlfriend and our bill was under $40. It can get quite cramped, but that adds to the fun, in my opinion. On weekends this place is often full of college kids because the price is so right, and it can get pretty boisterous. Pretty much everything on the menu is good, but the specials are often lacking. I've heard horror stories about the service, but I have been here about ten times and it has always been ex... read more
Great Italian for the price. – La Baia is a great little neighborhood space for when you want a nice meal out without breaking the budget. The space is small so go on a quiet night or early to avoid the crowds. Service is VERY Italian, as is the food: great crusty warm bread, soothing soups, and I love the arugula salad. I've never found the portions of the meat and fish dishes lacking and will more often than not come home with plenty of leftovers to enjoy the next day. While I might not go out of the way to go here, if you... read more
Great for College budgets – My one teammate was turning 19 one of the first weekends we were Philadelphia my freshmen year. My roommate and I wanted to take her out to a nice restaurante somewhere in the city but didn't think we'd be able to find a nice place for a college student's budget. Through citysearch I found the Bistro la Baia. We ended up eating outside, which was preferable considering the inside was packed. The food was really good. I really enjoyed our appetizers and the bread with oil and vinegar. The entrees w... read more
