Back Room

About this business

Through an alleyway and up some steps, one will be transported to something of a different era. The Back Room boasts a big mirrored bar, chandeliers and large scandalous paintings. The old, wooden, dimly-lit space includes bouncy barstools and very comfortable and inviting lounge spaces for large parties, if you can get them. Prohibition-esque booze is served in tea cups. Hey, c'mon, it's a speakeasy! Nevertheless, the Back Room is worth a visit to bring out your inner flapper.

What a change! – I honestly never do this, but after reading the other reviews, I felt like the Back Room was not evaluated fairly. I went for a friends party the other night and thought that the bar was a breath of fresh air! I thought the bouncer was polite, the decor was fantastic, and the crowd was a great mix of LES hipsters and Meatpacking hotties! I LOVED how they served the drinks in tea cups! Great place!!

What a disappointment – I was so excited by this place when I came in. Great atmosphere and warm space. BUT... The 8 dollar drinks look CUTE in teacups, but the size for the money is appalling. And the door security guard made me actually walk down the stairs and into the rain (when there was a perfectly nice vestibule) to make a PHONE CALL. I understand if they don't want you to smoke outside the door, but a phone call? At first I thought it was part of the theme of the place...but actually the guy was quite serious. The st... read more

Prohibition Era Attitude – Okay, so this place looks really neat and has a cool history ... its bound to become a real "see and be seen" hidden gem. But watch out. The staff is incredibly rude and doesn't deserve your money. I was with a large group of people who arranged an event at this bar, and one of our friends was ejected from the bar for complaining that his drink had been tossed by one of the bartenders. Do everyone a favor and just stay away.

Beautiful Room! Surly staff and bouncers! – I just went to this place for this first time last night. I LOVED the room. It's decorated like a 1920's speakeasy, and they take the theme seriously--giving drinks in little teacups! However, the drinks were outrageously priced ($6 for bottle of Bud) and the staff were incredibly surly. Also, the security guards were rather intimidating. I would recommend going here once, just to see it... but don't stay long enough to buy anything!
