Through an alleyway and up some steps, one will be transported to something of a different era. The Back Room boasts a big mirrored bar, chandeliers and large scandalous paintings. The old, wooden, dimly-lit space includes bouncy barstools and very comfortable and inviting lounge spaces for large parties, if you can get them. Prohibition-esque booze is served in tea cups. Hey, c'mon, it's a speakeasy! Nevertheless, the Back Room is worth a visit to bring out your inner flapper.

Ways to be exclusive. – Been meaning to check this place out for a while. Went last night. Doorman outside was cool but it was hard to see the toy shop sign with him standing DIrectly in front of it. You walk down the alley and then up into the place and there is a big bouncer presence. Decor is great, drinks decent although the teacups are a bit unwieldy. Then there is the back library bar. The bouncer there asked me for a password. Although I didn't think there was one(and told him so), he insisted and denied entrance to m... read more
my favorite spot – Coming to the backroom, you feel like you stepped into another time. the decor is absolutely fabulous! the staff is nothing but friendly. Even the customers are friendly - you feel safe & not feel like you have to watch out for drunk patrons.
Great experience once you get in. – Bouncer wasn't rude to us all at. Though I can see him being very selective when he's in that mode. Great vibe, a diversion from the regular LES pretentious crowd. It's a good change for good in this hood. Although the drinks are not up to par. The rum + coke tastes like medicine. And bottle selection sucks. Wine = red or white?!!! I mean, hello? You spend so much money PR-ing this place and you can't have A wine list?
Perfect spot for unpretentious folks – I really don't see how the previous reviewers had such a bad time. I try to visit the backroom at least once a week and highly recommend it to all my different groups of friends and colleagues who not once ever complained about the service. The margaritas are the best in the city and the bouncers are such good guys who do their jobs right. Many times, I have seen people pop attitude with the bouncers out front or try to sneak through the "back" thinking they could get away with it. What... read more
Worst Bar ever – I reserved tables on a saturday night, and was assured that their tight door policy wouldn't give me problems, since I had reserved tables in advance. Well, lets just say I was completely mislead by the pretentious, arrogant, and downright nasty overweight manager. I think he confuses the bar with studio 54 in the 70's. I had about 30 people who "should" have gotten in, but didn't on account of the manager. The service was terrible except for Megan who booked the party. The bouncers were strict and ridiculou... read more
Why the Complaining – I wen tthis weekend and had an ok time. Neither here nor there really. The one good thing I would say about it is that the staff was perfectly friendly. The doormen were giving kids just enough of a hard time to make them behave, bu there was no bungalow evil glare from behind a clipboard or anything.
Cool and Luxe – I have hung out at The Back Room several times and have found it to be chill, relaxed, and unusually friendly for a place with such a swank-o reputation. Last night Tim Robbins was at the bar, having a drink and chatting with some customers, the demure cocktail waitress flauced and flaunted around in her short short of-the-period skirt, and the bouncers watched calmly as some enthusiastic chicks shook their booties to Stevie Wonder. I dare say theses dudes even sang a little harmony to themselves while keepin... read more
WHAT A SHAME! – This is such a beautiful space.....when i first arrived I thought I would love it, BUT the doorman and other employees were so incredibly rude to my friends, and to the other bar patrons, that I doubt I will ever go back. They were bossy and scolding, and the doorman glared menacingly at our table the entire time (except for when he was busy scolding other patrons.) Felt like I was in school, or at my parents house--not what I want in a relaxing evening. The owners should rethink their uptight policies--espec... read more
Amazing and Bad – I signed up on CSearch after using it forever as a non member just to write this review. Back Room is off the beaten path, and beautifully executed. The bar is a real gem to look at, however, they have got to be kidding re: service, etc. The Bouncers are like former Scores doormen. Giant Muscle guys constantly scanning the room for fights or trouble. My friend went to meet her friend out front and they would not let her leave her coat inside. Too Many Rules. The place is like a catholic grade school run by ... read more
