Baba Yega

About this business

Baba means granny in Russian, and this restaurant—named after the fairy tale witch characterized in an Emerson, Lake and Palmer song—has been a fixture among the art galleries, antique stores and second-hand shops in the Montrose area since the early 1970s. The menu features contemporary cuisine ranging from healthy California-style salads, sandwiches and sprouts to burgers, rib eye steaks, pastas and a spicy, old-fashioned Southern gumbo.

great Good food and great seating (semi-outdoor patio); lots of vegetarian but has wonderful smoked turkey and brie sandwich and seasoned fries. Good vegetarian selections as well.

Enjoy a menu with a healthful bent at this quirky Montrose hideaway. – The Scene Since 1975, this converted bungalow-turned-eatery has charmed regulars with healthy fare and hearty portions. A crowd as eclectic as the menu dines in cozy tables throughout the house--on the back veranda with a view of the tranquil gardens and koi pond, oak-tree shaded front patio (ideal for people-watching) or the antique-filled main dining area. Service is casual and efficient. The Food The menu--featuring whole-grain breads and organic produ... read more

Great Atmosphere... – I have been to Baba Yega's many times over the past eight years and always come away with the same impresion. The atmosphere and ambiance is great, especially at night. The food is slightly above average, kudos to them to offering more vegeterian options than most. The service is always slow, sometimes polite, sometimes not. The entire dining area, in and out, and the restrooms are always clean. Pretty good place for a date, sit on the back patio.

Food Poisoning Twice! All my friends love this place, so even after I got food poisoning the first time, I kept going back in hopes it was an anamolly. About six months after my first poisoning, I got it again! Both times I had ordered their vegetarian club sandwich.

Killer potato salad Baba Yega's is a fantastic restaurant to eat at. hey have awesome burgers, wines, drinks, and KILLER potato salad! The prices run from $7-16 for entrees, appetizers and salads start at $3.00. It is so delicious, and well worth the stop!

LOVE the brunch buffet – We have made the Baba Yega Sunday brunch part of our regular routine. The food is amazing, and we love the ambience. Although we have not ordered off the regular menu, it looks really great. Service is always wonderful, and the wait is never too long even on crowded days. It's one thing I will really miss about Houston when I no longer live here.

almost perfect – first, i love baba yega's food. there is something for everyone on the menu, including the killer low fat chocolate torte. my only complaint is the lack of enthusiasm from the service. as a waitor myself, i can't see how these people can be perfectly decent servers without having any signs of life or personality. i kept getting my food and drink on time, but it seemed to be delivered by a robot. if they could attend a pep rally first, this place would be top-notch.

Consistantly Good – Baba Yega is one of the prettiest restaruants in Houston, especially the back covered patio area. I have read some complaints about the food, but if you stay with the sandwiches and salads you can't go wrong -as good as any in town. This is basically a sandwich shop, don't expect fine dining and you will be pleased.

Great Brunch Spot! – I've only been here once for brunch, but it was fantastic! Really good serive and the food was delicious. For about $15 a person, you can have all the salads, fruit, pastas, eggs, walffles, grilled chicken, and salmon you want. A great variety and nice atomosphere brings this vibrant little house to a delight!
