A well Thought out Wine List to Boot – I only had a day and a half to spend in SF this time so I picked four old favorites to visit. Aqua, Thep Panom, Postrio and Khan Toke. On the day of my visit, Aqua was about half full of customers but everyone there was full of enthusiasm. Great service, intriguing appetizers and my entree plus a well thought out and organized wine list. The wine list was my lunch companion when my lunch appointment canceled. Not a bad substitute.
Sadly, a horrible experience. – We've been to Aqua for the past 4 years for our anniversary, but sadly we will never go back. We called ahead for a special table, ordered a special bottle of wine, ordered the tasting menu and then waited 2 1/2 hours to receive our first taste. Turns out the kitchen lost our order. Because of unusual delay, the waiter told us the wine would be compliments of Aqua, but when we received our bill, it was only a $25 discount (the rest was still charged). Terrible Experience – I had a terrible experience at Aqua recently. The waiter was borderline rude, barely even taking the time to explain dishes to us while flirting with guests at other tables. For such a pricey restaurant, I would expect the service to be good even if the food wasn't. Unfortunately, the food also disappointed me and my date. All in all, for $260, I would not go there again. Be careful what you expect at Aqua.
Overpriced, Over-hyped, too loud – I went to Aqua for the 1st time on an expense account and was disappointed by the average but overpriced food. The tuna tartare, while presented w/ great fanfare by 2 waiters, was...well, bland - the most flavor I tasted was the olive oil. The scallops were big, but again not memorable. Um...are they trying for the "subtle flavors?" It was a business lunch, but the restaurant was too loud and tables too close together to discuss business. We Had a Great Time! – I read numerous user reviews before going to AQUA, many of which were negative. So when we showed up last night I was expecting a snobbish wait staff. But that wasn't the case - our waitress was excellent and the table staff courteous and professional. The food was excellent as well - all of it! (Which was a bit of a surprise, based on the reviews). AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! – Aqua is the best restaurant ever made! It is paradise! Everything from my trio of foie gras to salmon was superb! The way the chefs prepared their dishes fascinated me! The service was excellent and I was seated immediately when I reached there, unlike Gary Danko. Aqua is a place to eat their everyday-each meal, breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Everything but the food.... – Everything behind the scenes is wonderful at this place. Everything in front of the kitchen is just plain bad. The staff appears to have been beamed up from another galaxy. If you can get past this and just concentrate on the food, you'll be fine. The scallop and three pate appetizers were incredible and enormous. Both the monkfish and the sole were cooked to perfection and amazingly flavorful and rich. overpriced and overhyped – Sadly, for the wonderful reviews, this restaurant didn't live up to expectations. One fish entree was overdone, the other underdone. The service was third rate--had to ask time and again to get water refilled as well as wine poured. Sat at a bank of tables against the wall with no privacy. For $200+ bill for two people, this was unacceptable, in my view.
