the best tuna tartar around!!! – Not so much to say about this place other than the room is beautiful and i LOVE the tuna tartar. We'll be back!
Pros: Impossibly delicious food, absolutely top notch service, comfortable atmosphere | Cons: Price – I took my girlfriend here for her 30th birthday. Finally ate here, but disappointed – This place has a reputation that would be hard for any restaurant to live up to, but still I'm disappointed. First the three course meal is 70.00 per person. We had the special salad that night that consisted of greens, beets and goat cheese, very basic and nothing special( thought the waiter made it sound special). User review by jimd – I've been to Aqua a number of times over the years and I never had a bad meal. While some dishes aren't anything to remember there have many moments of sheer heaven. Recent dishes that I found excellent were the duck bouillon soup, Walu fish with curry and the parmesan black pepper soufflé. Negatives include a menu that doesn't seem to change that much and a very annoying wanna be seen crowd that overflows the restaurant on weekends.
Amazing Meal – Let me first say that some of the reviews made me question this restaurant, I am happy I didn't listen. When I made the reservation, I was asked if this was a special occasion (yes), did we have plans afterwards (yes). They made an effort in these avenues. We opted for the three-course meal. Wow. – 7 of us were promptly seated. We ordered the 7 course tasting menu. Every dish was phenomenal. By far the best souflet, urchin, raw ahi, grapefruit puree, ... the list is so long. Impeccable service; the waitstaff were amazingly attentive and coordinated. We waited no more than a few minutes between each course. What happended? – Sadly something is amiss at one of my favorite restaurants. We went to Aqua and had the 5 course chefs tasting menu. Our foie gras was cold. After sending them back, half of them arrived back in the same sorry state. The 3rd course of salmon was raw and quite inedible as it was poorly seasoned. It also came 25 min later. We did not stay for the other courses as we had had it. Its a shame to see one of SF best restaurants come to this. Another great SF restaurant crashes and burns – Once a standard of SF restaurants, Aqua is on its way out. The changes in chef, kitchen staff and management have taken their toll. Service was great, the food was horrible. Cold foie gras (2 times returned), and a 30 minute wait between courses, caused us to leave before the final 2 courses. I will never return....
