On 19 Jan 2019 received an AARP subscription renewal request stating "Reply by 29 Mar 2019" My subscription expires 29 Jan 2020, so they want their money more than a year in advance! (The actual expiration is nowhere on the request.) Like many others who receive these early and multiple renewal requests, I believe this to be a deceptive practice, EXACTLY what they claim to be protecting their membership against. So not only will I not pay this early renewal, I will NEVER pay another renewal.
Business response:
Dear Mr. Davidson - Thank you for your many years as an active AARP member. On your behalf, I researched your comment and found, per your request, we had suppressed renewal notices from being sent to you at your address in 2016. Although we do not have a copy of the mailing you received, it appears that it was a generic mailing. “Generic” promotional pieces are sent out in mass mailings as part of AARP’s overall membership acquisition program. These pieces are neither addressed to nor targeted to a particular person or house... read more
They are dishonest and deceptive. My husband cancelled my mother-in-law's subscription last year and they affirmed it was cancelled. Well, this year they charged her account once again. My husband was on the phone forever. The foreign agent could not understand the simplest words and my husband had to keep repeating the spellings over and over again. And after all this, it still is not resolved. AARP has no problem, whatsoever, taking advantage of the elderly and making a cancellation unbearable and impossible.
AARP is a terrible company. I joined once when they offered a leather bag with my membership, but they never sent it and when I asked about it, they said there was no offer. I found no reason to pay them a yearly fee, because I could get better deals on my own and all they could offer was informational articles. After my membership ended, AARP started sending my email and snail mail. Lots of both types of mail, so I asked them to stop all mail. The replies were ridiculous and had nothing to do with my request. I then threate... read more
Renewal tactics misleading. AARP website directed me to call 800 number when I tried to editing my information. I called, that was done and asked if I could renew by telephone. I was quoted 3 membership terms and opted for 3 years at $43.00. The charge went through per telephone person but no confirmation number nor receipt sent. After hanging up I noticed a recent mailer quoting 3 years for $30.00. I immediately called back to rectify pricing, was told not possible. I could mail check in and call when check clears for 43.00... read more
Business response:
We apologize for your less-than-expected customer service experience. AARP does offer special/promotional pricing at different times of the year; our representative should have accommodated you in a more timely and reasonable fashion. We're glad we were able to follow-up on this comment and provide you with superlative service. We appreciate both you and your membership! Thank you for brining this to our attention.
A few months ago we made the mistake of booking a hotel room through the AARP travel website managed by Expedia. Since then we have been receiving marketing SPAM from @expedia-aarp.com and our repeated use of the unsubscribe link in these SPAM messages has had no effect. We would advise everyone not to use the AARP travel site to book reservations.
Positve comment: I have found useful information in the bulletins and magazines I've received. Negative comment: I agree that aarp uses faux urgent renewal tactics. My membership expires in 2/19 and I'm already receiving notices that I'd better hurry up and renew before my membership expires...
AARP Road Service sold me service for a specific vehicle for which they had the description and the VIN number. I broke down in the middle of a bridge in Alabama and AARP refused to send help (I am in my 70's and was traveling with only my 3 dogs). They said that my vehicle was not appropriate for the coverage they sold to me. They didn't even offer to try to make this right. I had to try to find help in the middle of nowhere and I think they should reimburse me for what it cost to get towed, which was over $300 as well as r... read more
If you are Canadian, you do not get website access! No way to check profile or membership information. Why? I do business with many US-based organizations - Avis, hotel chains, etc. Only way to get information is to persist through the labyrinth of phone options.
Business response:
Thank you for your membership. In 2014, Canada enacted the Canadian Anti-Spam Legislation (CASL), which created very specific requirements for obtaining and tracking individual’s consent to receive certain electronic communications, including emails. AARP is a US-based nonprofit organization. AARP’s record keeping and data management systems are not currently designed to meet the requirements of the Canadian legislation. AARP made the decision to cease sending email to known Canadian email addresses or residents. We recogni... read more
I noticed that 36 out of 40 customer reviews are negative, yet AARP has an A+ rating. How is that possible? I just left another negative review. Also, it shows up on Google as an 4 out of 5-star rating. Something is wrong here. AARP has terrible billing practices and they send too much junk mail asking people for memberships even though you have already paid.
Business response:
Dear Ms. Stewart, Thank you for your many years as an active AARP member. You can find a comprehensive review of the Better Business Bureau rating system at: https://www.bbb.org/en/us/overview-of-bbb-ratings. AARP can customize the amount of communications our members receive. Issues regarding mail, email or renewals are easily resolved with a phone call to one of our representatives at **************. It was my pleasure to personally assist you the other day. We aspire to exceed the expectations of our members and all those... read more
