Beach-themed boutique hotel embodies the Gaslamp's urban oasis vibe with a fitness center, two cocktail lounges and a pan-Asian restaurant. – In Short Following a multi-million dollar makeover in summer 2008, The W's beach-chic theme is more vibrant than ever. Updates are evident in the lobby's Living Room lounge, where classic surfer films play on one large wall, a lifeguard stand doubles as a DJ deck and an art installation of fiberglass surfboard fins fills the ceiling. Coral and sky blue accents, mermaid murals and crisp... read more
A fun W if you're staying downtown I've stayed at a lot of W's on my travels. This isn't the very best (my favorites are the W Union Square in NYC and the W New Orleans) but this W has a great, friendly staff (not snobby like the W Westwood) and nice, modern rooms. I've recommended the hotel to visiting friends and stayed there once when out of town friends were there.
4 Star hotel with cheap windows – The "W" has all of the amenities you would expect from a hip urban hotel...amazing customer service, fantastic attention to detail (the floormats in the elevators are changed throughout the day to read "good morning/afternoon/evening")...you really do get what you pay for...with a few caveats: 1) The windows are ridiculously thin. Bear in mind the lobby turns into a party on Friday and Saturday nights, and many of the revelers linger outside after midnight. I could hear every word of their c... read more
The Best Pet-Friendly Hotel – I have never been disappointed by any W Hotel around the world. I don't care if they are faking it -- but they know how to take care of their dog-loving guests. Nearly every detail is taken care of from water bowls & treats near the taxi stand outside to the comfy dog beds and goodie bags given to the dogs. The best part is that every staff member from the front desk to the housekeepers all genuinely appear to love dogs and always have a friendly smile or petting session for your dogs. The dog-f... read more
Simply "Okay" – The "W" is a brick and mortor paradox for me. I like the fact that is considered "hip" and "trendy". The San Diego location, just like its NYC and San Francisco brethren, includes an in-house bar that is considered a see and be-seen place by even the locals. The restaurant is quite good, and the downstairs cocktail lounge is great for meeting up before heading out or meeting back up after a night out and deconstructing the evening with friends. Moreover, the rooms are amusingly and tastefully appointed (big f... read more
Marginally acceptable for Breakfast, but a Disaster for Dinner – My dinner experience here was horrible. The wait staff didn't know anything about wine, in our party of six, everyone's food was either cold, over-cooked, dry, too salty, too sweet, or all of the above. My steak was well-done (a filet well done!!!!!!), and the panna cotta was rubbery, and you had a sneaking suspicion half the things they served were out of a box/can. We were one of six tables in the restaurant and the food took forever to be served. As you can ... read more
Sand, cocktails, music and a fire pit! – I went here with my uncle and his date after dinner back in early 2002. We arrived fairly early, and we were able to get prime seating directly in front of their fire pit. The drinks were pricey but strong. The sand was a nice touch, and the background music was decent. As the night progressed, the place became crowded, seemingly beyond capacity. People practically fought for seating near the fire pit as the temperature dropped. I'd recommend this as a great place for after-dinner coc... read more
W won't disappoint... – The W in San Diego will meet all expectations. It is modern, beautiful, and the employees work extra hard to ensure your comfort. Just don't forget that even if you are a hotel guest, you need reservations for a cabana on the swanky rooftop sand deck.
Avoid at all times, awful – I usually do not write restaurant reviews, especially negative ones because of the degree of impact on the restaurant's business... however after a night of stomach cramps and extreme nausea after eating at Rice, I felt indebted to voice my opinion. Not only was this restaurant incredibly overpriced ($130) for dinner for 2 with some of the smallest portions I have seen... but the food made me sick! Will never return. You're better off going to one of the small non-room-service-level restaurants in... read more
