What happened? – For some reason, Citysearch did not post my previous comment...so here it is again. I have been to Umi's several times since it has been opened and have never had a problem with it. However, when I went to eat there 2 weekends ago, I was shocked that they had raised the prices. By A LOT. I asked the servers and discovered that they had recently gotten new management. Well, that's too bad for Umis because the new "management" obviously does not understand that you cannot charge a premium price on mediocre foo... read more

New Management is Clueless – Yes, we were so excited when Umi first opened, good quality, reasonable sushi in S. Austin. Finally a closer more affordable alternative to Musashino. Umi is close to AMD and other large S. Austin employers and we started going there for lunch regularly as the lunch special was quite a value. Now the new mgmt has jacked up the prices ($10 for the lunch special plus $2) for a glass of iced tea!!) and we are no longer going to Umi for lunch. Umi mgmt doesn't understand that they compete with other ... read more

UMI Raised Their Prices – I have been going to UMI for quite a while now. I went there because the fish was good, and had an appealing price. Now, I went to UMI last week and was horrible appauled by the price raises. The sushi tasted the same, the presenation was a little better - but it is not near with the extra money. It cost $80 for two people! For that much money I could have easily gone to MUSASHINO! The #1 Sushi place in Austin.

Good rolls, bad nigiri – As an asian, I know what's a good sushi takes. The rolls are good. The nigiri is BAD. The nigiri is often packed with rice (I've been to this place a few times). Its so dense that I would need to chew on it. The proportion of rice and fish ration is horrible. This is not the place for nigiri.

Good Sushi – I don't eat sushi myself, but when I want to treat husband to one of his favorite foods, this is where I take him. The first bite, he always gives this sigh of delight :) We tired Sushi Sake once, and his comment was that we'd stick to Umi from now on.

They're trying to push away customers – I've been to Umi about ten times. They have recently instituted a policy of absolutely NO substitutions. I found this out a week ago when my girlfriend ordered a bento box and they wouldn't substitute a crunchy roll instead of the california roll. $0.30 extra for the crunchy! I said we'd pay a little more no problem, still not allowed. However, a week earlier it was ok. The waitress told me within that week management declared substitutions against the rules. With so many good sushi pl... read more

UMI? OOOOH, ME! (UCK!) – As somewhat of a traveller, having been to Osaka, Kyoto, Hiroshima, and Kobe, Japan, I know what sushi is supposed to taste like. I have been to Umi three times, two of which I had to leave early because of the horrific stench of the sushi. Not fresh. Not the way it REALLY tastes. I will give them that the Asahi Super Dry is VERY cold. Nothing more. Yes, the interior is overdone, but it's not near the "bad factor" of the food.

The reason to rediscover sushi – I've never been disappointed when visiting Umi, even if it's to stop for a cocktail at their wonderful bar. Dining is always a pleasure. I like trying new things and the wait staff is helpful when I feel like experimenting. The atmosphere is nice - trendier than other sushi restaurants of its size without feeling so snooty. The sashimi is excellent as are the rolls. The specials are too so make sure you ask if none are mentioned.

Umi is the best – For my money, considering ALL factors (food, price and service) UMI is hands down the best in Austin. Unlike some other restaurants with equally good sushi, the service is friendly and attentive, and the seating is ample and comfortable. And no snooty attitude or inflated prices. The food is out of this world, we go there for every special occasion and any time else we want Japanese.
