A trendy sushi and Japanese establishment has finally hit South Austin. Upon entering you will notice the modern earth tone décor and a full bar with over 20 beers on tap. The bar has several tables for dining and a smoking area, which is a rarity in Austin. Appetizers include Shrimp Tempura, Edamame, Gyoza and Baked Mussels. The sushi menu consists of regular favorites like Unagi (fresh water eel), Maguro (tuna), Sake (salmon) and Ebi (shrimp). It also features Hamachi (yellow tail), Suzuki (sea bass), Ika (squid), T... read more

Japanese specialties in a bold, bright setting. – In Short Pink, green and purple neon walls clash with carved stone sculptures and cloisonné figures. A long curvy granite bar features some pretty tilework. Cold appetizers, include seaweed salad, marinated and dotted with sesame seeds and Japanese pickles. The sushi deluxe features salty salmon roe, squid, eel and tuna, some pieces garnished with dabs of grated daikon radish. Ginger ice cream makes a novel dessert.
Worst sushi experience ever. – Here's my Umi experience: We order sushi, it takes over an hour to come and it's not busy. More sushi comes out than we ordered and we are charged more than what we ordered in the end. The sushi is mediochre. The person that ordered teriyaki gets it one hour before our sushi comes out. We complain to an irate manager than barely speaks English. Finally the sushi comes out. She very rudely says that what we experienced was normal. We ask for our bill to be reduced because nothing went right and ... read more
Good service, ok sushi, huge cup of sake – After living in Tokyo for 6 months, I doubted that I could ever find a sushi restaurant to truly satiate my cravings. Umi is the second place I've tried in Austin, and while I wasn't impressed by the quality of fish (the salmon was a little fishy and the tuna had little flavor), I did have a pleasant dining experience. Very good service, good tempura, especially the sweet potato, and their glass of sake was huge! Expensive for the quality (at $5 for 2 pieces), but I would certianly ... read more
Expensive, but worth it – Very nice place, very worth the money. The sushi is very good here and the atmosphere is classy-chic. It's a hip place for Austinites of all walks to dine. We go whenever the bank account permits and munch on sushi and are never disappointed. The wait staff has impeccable manners, is sharply dressed and aim to please. The sushi chefs are happy to accomodate your every whim and fancy and the menu is full of choices. The music is sometimes a bit loud and tends to sound a lot the same, though I do like... read more
Excellent Sushi! – Fresh flavorful sushi, friendly professional staff, and calming atmosphere all lead to a wonderful evening.
our favorite! – Umi has consistently remained our favorite restaurant in town. Not only have we had the best Cod there, but we were delighted with the newest additions to the menu. Several new appetizers which are fusion inspired keep us coming back. The prices are reasonable, the fish fresh, the music fantastic! The crowd remains eclectic, from dressed-up to go downtown to very casual. If you haven't been in a while it is worth a re-visit!
Umi has changed – I can confirm the other reviews that state that Umi has raised their prices. My husband and I always went to UMI for special events and to impress out of town guests so we are very familiar with the menu. Prices have gone up and the quality of some of the rolls, hot roll and spicy tuna roll, california roll and tiger eye roll, is not what we were used to. Usually the hot roll is one of the best items on the menu, lately this item has been sloppily made and almost flavorless. The spicy tuna roll stunk like o... read more
Best Sushi in the South – I have been going to umi for about a year now. I happened upon some cheap peoples comments about how they had raised the price. Yes I went there the other night and the prices was up, Tuna is not $5 for two pieces and it used to be $4.95 just a few weeks ago. And the glass of house white is now $5 not $4.50! Please Umi still has the best little neighborhood feel of any sushi bar in austin and it still have the best prices. I say Hooray UMI!
Disappointed – This used to be one of our favorite restaurants. But the last couple of times we've been, we could see that big changes were afoot, including a completely unnecessary level of pretentiousness and much higher prices. We've decided to stop going there and to go to Seoul Sushi House instead. Umi is still an OK place, but it's too expensive and has lost its easy, neighborhood feel.
