I walked into the shop, and the first thing he said to me was, “You’ve never been here before.” I told him I hadn’t and that I was just looking to get a haircut. He then started asking me where I’ve gotten my hair cut before and when my last haircut was. After that, he told me he wouldn’t cut my hair because it was too long and he didn’t want to deal with it. Went in sometime in November ‘25, and he’s pretty picky AND vocal about what kind of cuts he can do. The fact that he sticks to what he knows is somewhat appreciated, but it honestly doesn’t have too much of a place in the current day, and even less so in a college town. Went in for a buzzcut & he needed SEVERAL confirmations that it was really what I wanted.

I used to be a regular at Troy’s for about a year when I lived on N Hyland Ave, and I always had a good enough experience. I moved away for about a year and recently came back to the area, so I decided to return for a haircut. Unfortunately, the experience this time was completely different. It is not as advertised. It is labeled a walk in hair cutting place however I tried to walk in to get a basic hair cut and he told me he doesn’t want my business since I go to school here and won’t be in town very long. Completely unprofessional to have a sign saying walk in welcomes yet turning me down when there was no one else in there. Get your hair cut anywhere else in Ames.
