Once upon a time this was one of Williamsburg's jewels. Having been away for twenty years, I wanted to come for a birthday lunch. I was happy to see Death by Chocolate was still on the menu despite the several years since the owner/founder sold the restaurant. Intentionally ordered a light lunch anticipating a decadent dessert. Delicious food and spirits. Alluring, intimate dining rooms, but sit outside on the patio to soak in the feel of Colonial Williamsburg. Last, but not least, the entire staff is absolutely professional, patient, and very accommodating.

20 years ago this was a great restaurant. Not so today, just ok. Trout I ordered was not special but good. They would not accommodate some of our group who wanted to substitute a veggie for their standard side for their dish, which is a clear sign that the place has slipped. Considering premium pricing, not being willing to add mashed potatoes (available with other dishes) to grilled salmon seems odd.
