Poor at best. – Ate breakfast hear for the first and last time. The juices are not fresh and come from whole foods. (not even the fresh products but the glass jar ones from the shelf) There is no butter, only hydrogenated oils they serve as butter. The potatoes where old and over cooked. Servers did not know how to refill a water glass. I could have made a better breakfast with stuff from the carry out on the corner.
The classic diner – Great american diner food. Enjoyed the Popeye's favorite wirh rye toast. Will go again soon
Gag Me – Wow, where do I begin? I worked in the restaurant industry for 9 years, I know the deal. My parents made their fortune from restaurants and bars, so I feel like I understand both sides very well and it justifies this review ;-/ So, today we gave this place a second try. It had been about 3 years and we wanted to try it again. My decaf coffee tasted like instant coffee, my oatmeal had so much butter and brown sugar I could hardly eat it, the blue berries were those tiny shriveled gross thingys, not real fresh fruit. ... read more
only legit american breakfast in ATX – Have been eating here since I was two. Only legit diner in town, magnolia's spun off of omelettry, kerby spun off of mag's, and who the hell cares about star seed's since they stopped the smoking. best pancakes in town, all the others copy their recipes huge portions cheap prices dont eat the chips and salsa Not a corporate or a chain, the customer is only accidently right here, seriously have heard the manager throw out a awful customer saying, We HONESTLY DON'T NEED YOUR BUSINESS. ha!... read more
25 year record – I have been eating here since college in the early 80's. I visit Austin two or three times a year with my students and have never been disappointed with either the staff or the food. Since the cost is so reasonable, cash only should not present a problem. The gingerbread pancakes are so much better than Kerbey Lane and need only a little syrup because they are so sweet. Okay, so it is a hippie dive, but this conservative loves it and if you want the true Austin experience, this is your spot. Give it a try.
Hands down best pancakes I've ever eaten – Ok, so the place looks like a dump and just does not look like it could be clean but man oh man are the pancakes delicious. I don't know what magic they use but they have nailed the perfect breakfast pancake. Alt Rock staff is always surprisingly friendly although overworked, they do a brisk business so expect a wait. Just watch your kids as the wait area flows into the busy parking lot. Excellent breakfast everytime we go.
Huge Disappointment – Do you look forward to a hot homemade breakfast? Do you appreciate a clean restaurant? Do you LIKE to pay a fee to use your credit card? Atmosphere is one thing, dirt is another. For instance, take a minute to look up--are there clumps of dirt clinging to the fan blades? And take a peek into the kitchen as you pass by...This was the first 'flag' on my recent visit here. I ordered the Huevos Rancheros, and they were hugely disappointing. The scrambled eggs were laying in a puddle of watery liquid, the bl... read more
EGGCELLENT – Although there is a bit of a wait, I promise it will be worth the while. While the omelets are very good, but the pancakes are the best i've had in Austin. The prices are reasonable, and not too expensive. The only downside to the Omelettry is the waiting. You'll wait to get a table and You'll wait to get your food. The waitstaff was extremely friendly, but I guess they should be since it takes so long to get the food to the table.
decent but cold – Food is really good, but service is slow and it is ALWAYS freezing inside. Be prepared. Still, it is a funky hipster/slacker hangout, so you get what you ought to expect, as such.
