My wife and I "discovered" Dawes by accident when we were dating 25 years ago. She was stranded on I-70 and I came out to rescue her, and when we came back to pick up her car, I saw the sign for Dawes, remembered an article I read about it in the newspaper, and decide to stop in to check it out. We live about 60 miles away, but have been back dozens of times since. It has always been a special place for us, and we look forward to returning for many years to come!

The Dawes Arboretum has a mixture of old wooded areas and landscape plantings, making it a big draw for birds. The holly collection draws fruit-eating species in winter. The Bird Garden draws northern breeding seed-eating birds. Rarities have included Black-throated Gray Warbler in April, 2002, and more recently, Harris' Sparrow, in January 2018. The Dutch Fork Wetlands holds rails in season, and Nelson's Sparrows have been sighted there during fall migration. Owls have been recorded as nesters.
