Currently my favorite sushi in LA! – Love it! Omakase or a la carte, cold beer on tap in chilled ceramic glasses. Great prices. Fish I would generally be a little reluctant to have is absolutely delicious!!!
Best Omakase in LA – Although at first glance you may assume this is typical LA strip-mall sushi, don't be fooled. It's divine. Don't miss the omakase menu--it may be the best you've ever had.
Exceptional sushi – The quality of the sushi here is really top notch. In the same vein as Sasabune and Echigo - warm sushi rice, no cut rolls, just nigiri and the occasional hand roll. Unlike Sasabune, which has turned into a factory-like operation, this place is a hidden gem that takes the appropriate time to prepare everything with care. The chef takes sushi seriously, and you definitely reap the benefits. Hope this place sticks around for a long, long time. It's by no means cheap, but definitely worth every penny.
Fresh Fish! – Tried this unassuming sushi spot on National based on several reviews and food blogs. Thought it would look like the typical, old, hole-in-the wall joints that usually serve the best sushi, but was surprised to find a very new space in a strip mall. Upon entrance, the waitress will ask if you're a first time visitor, and if you say yes, she'll rattle off with all the rules (no cali roll, no cut roll, no tempura, etc...). Was a little weirded out, but I guess they get a lot of novice sushi eaters. The menu is ve... read more
Sushi nazis, but in a good way – I am no sushi expert- I have never been to any of the places other reviewers have compared to Sushi Zo- but I still enjoyed eating here. The waitress could tell the moment my husband and I walked in the door that we were sushi noobs, and she warned us about the fact that there were no California rolls (which made us sad), but we went for it anyway and had a nice time. It was more of an educational cultural experience than I've yet had eating sushi. There were even instructions on the tables f... read more
best sushi by far. – Order the "special" yellowtail handroll. Every piece we order makes us all stop every single time to think about how good it is. I order things here I would never order anywhere else and I am never disappointed. (And I am a bit of a picky eater). Keisosan selects the fish himself, and is willing to make recommendations based on that day. Also, he remembers my food allergy and the names of my friends every time we come in. I rated this restaurant a perfect 10 because I love the people there, the sushi is ... read more
Absolutely Awesome – Previous owner/chef from Hide and it is fantasic. Fresh fish, nice portions and reasonable. It is a cross between Hide and Sasabune. You can to "trust me" (which I did), or order. Service is also fantasic. Don't pass on the Oysters - not usually a huge fan, but WOW. Very local, no frills - but will soon be a staple.
it melts in your mouth – chef keizo's new venture should be a success. i had omakase and trusted in chef keizo. he started off with mackarel prepared like a salad. then, he gave me the salmon, toro, yellowtail and white shrimp -- which were all excellent -- they just melted in your mouth. the monkfish liver, bluecrab roll, flying fish, kanpachi were also very good. chef keizo prepares the sushi with warm rice (just like echigo, sasabune, etc.) and he tells you weather you should add soy sauce or not. he ended my meal with a ... read more
Hidden Gem – This brand new sushi place features the freshest sushi this side of Japan. Opened recently by a 15-year veteran chef from Hide Sushi, Sushi Zo has the best melt-in-your-mouth treats that rivals LA's infamous Nozawa, Sasabune and Matushisa. If you love sushi, just go for the Omakase, and let the owner/chef prepare his personal selection of the best fish that LA's fish mart had to offer that morning at 5am. It's off the beaten path, but close enough to the 10 and 405, that within a matter of months, word of mouth ... read more
