If my Alma Mater, Barnard College, had sent Caliope's admission application back without even considering it (because she is a transgender woman and identifies as a woman) I would be outraged. Smith taught me how to think and act independently. It revealed to me the inequalities of the world, and instilled in me a passion to achieve equal rights. It is a place of privilege, sequestered from the real world to a large degree, and a safe place for women to begin to discover their own identities. I appreciate my Smith education more with each passing year.
