Schubert's Bakery

About this business

This wonderful German bakery has been purveying rich coffee cakes, creamy mousse cakes and a cornucopia of butter cookies since 1911. The tiny space with a few tables and chairs is usually crammed with people trying to decide between the classic Swedish Princess (white cake with raspberry and kirsch custard and marzipan icing) and one of the many delicious French-inspired mousses and tarts. The fresh bread is also terrific, if you can tear yourself away from the Strawberry Romanoff.

WUNDERBAR! – Everything here is delicious... I love the Princess Cake, the Double Chocolate Mousse, the Currant Mousse, the sticky buns, the jam sandwich cookies dipped in chocolate with some tea... it smells amazing and looks beautiful. The owners of the bakery are extremely nice. And to whoever posted the last comment: no grocery store I ever saw sold a cake, let alone a princess cake as delicious as Schubert's! This German bakery is wunderbar.

A little disappointing... – I had heard so many good things about Schuberts, but have to admit it was a bit of a let down. I got a slice of chocolate cheesecake, cappuccino mousse, and princess cake. The chocolate cheesecake didn't have very much flavor and the princess cake is good but no better than a cake you would get at a grocery store. The best one was the cappuccino mousse, but still didn't completely impress me. The service was by far the worst aspect of the experience! The girl was extremely rude and treated me like... read more

Not impressed – I have heard rave reviews about Schuberts from friends, but am totally disappointed. I had cakes from there on three occasions over the past 2 years thinking maybe the cake I got was just below their usual quality. Ordered the first cake in person about 2 days ahead. They must have given me the cake that was on display in the window from 2 days ago; it was one of the driest cakes I've ever had. Next, I tried a rasberry mousse cake; the mousse was very foamy with large air bubbles and the cake was dry. I also ... read more

Service gets worse and worse! Will never go back! – We have been loyal patrons of this bakery for more than 20 years, but not anymore. We always orders our cakes from them (birthdays, weddings, etc.). However, this weekend they neglected to notify us of their mistake. When I went to pick up my order I was greeted with absolute indifference, and barely an apology. I was told that nothing could be done for me and to just pick something out from the case. After expressing my disappointment I was rudely told that they did not ha... read more

fantastic cakes – My wife and I shopped around for a wedding reception cake, went to several of the supposedly "top notch" bakeries in East Bay, and were disappointed. A co-worker recommended Schuberts. When we walked in, our first thought was "Now THIS looks like a bakery". We got a tiramisu that was a piece of art and delicious. The catering staff at our reception spot said it was the best looking one they've seen and better taste than the one they sometimes made themselves. Have since tried Schubert's Princess, Opera, Ita... read more

great bakery! – i finally went to Schubert's, cause i had to shop on Clement, and i wanted to eat a something good. i have to say, they know how to make good pastries and cookies. i loved their cheese puff. they also had teeny-weeny cookies w/ jam on top...sooo good! i had them w/ milk when i got home. i will be coming here more, now that one of my fave bakeries, Boniere Bakery in Alameda, has their menu w/ the new ownership.

The Best Bakery... Hands Down! – Schubert's is the BEST! The cakes are so light, but full of flavor! None of their cakes are too sweet or not sweet enough... they're just PERFECT! With all the different kinds of cakes, it's hard to just take 1 home! Their designs are BEAUTIFUL and one of a kind. Their prices are reasonable and they take most major credit cards, so it's convenient. I was introduced to Schubert's by a family member and to my delight, I found out that we've been buying our cakes from them for about 10+ years no... read more

Love this place!! – Had a cake tasting for my wedding. All were delicious, but settled on choco mousse and amaretto custard. Subsequent visits included choco mousse cake, MM. Fantastic taste. Great service. Beautiful cakes. Vast selection readily available.
