Just discovered this year old restaurant that had a wait list but was worth the short wait. The food was exceptional and staff lovely and attentive. Indonesian fare with a kick and any sweetness is not cloying. Try this!!
We had our anniversary dinner here today. The ambiance and food were both great, but the service was truly exceptional. Since the restaurant had limited space, we had to move from our table for four to another table. However, the host handled the situation so well that we didn’t feel inconvenienced at all. To make up for the table change, he even offered us two complimentary mocktails, which was a very kind and thoughtful gesture. We really appreciated the outstanding hospitality and had a wonderful experience overall.
Sambal deserves 10 stars. Absolutely incredible food and hospitality by their staff. Our server described every dish in great detail and mentioned how many of their ingredients are sourced directly from Indonesia. It’s no wonder that every single dish was so flavourful and elevated. And it was apparent that the kitchen staff put a lot of care into their work. Amazing, I cannot wait to be back. This has become our favourite restaurant on the Danforth.
They make great fried rice with a nice amount of spice (too spicy but not deadly spicy). The rendang was very soft and easy to chew. My only complaint is that the portions are rather small for the price. Edit: updated review after my second visit, 9 months after the first. This time the fried rice was not as good, too sweet and the spice can barely be enjoyed due to the sweetness. The service was still great and hospitable. This place is amazing. The food and service was both excellent. I used to live in Holland and they had excellent Indonesian food, this is the fist place I have had in north America that matches it, if not was even better. The peanut sauce on the chicken sate is to die for, the nasi goreng brought me back to my childhood. Great place for dates, my wife finally understood why I have raving about indonesian foood for so long and I am glad I have finally found it. We will definitely be back and take my friends here.
