The racism being shown by the leadership is horrific. RWA needs to clean house!
RWA has had several issues involving racism over the years. The first black woman to win a RITA was in 2019 after a backlash about the issue in 2018. The same year a Chinese American woman was suspended for criticizing a book with racist content. Additionally there is evidence that the new president, Damon Suede, is more interested in protecting publisher's than authors. Twice in 2019 the organization has sided with publishers rather than fighting for authors.
Your’re a mess. You tolerate white privilege and hasn’t been fully transparent to the members. I would not recommend joining.
Unfair and disparate treatment of members
(Post edited to be less gender ageist) By being a lot less racist and listening to voices other than those of white people who think it was acceptable to be racist in the nineties.
Racist, homophobic, and has always ignored real issues.
Extensive organization with wonderful volunteers and staff genuinely concerned about improving writing craft in their members and promoting opportunities for publication. Their conferences are the best in the industry, and they work hard to create a top notch writing experience for everyone.
Shady, underhanded, unprofessional
No, I would not recommend RWA due to the racism at large for people of color.
