Dear Romance Writers of America, improve takes will power. You have ignored a huge segment of your reading and writing public. People that I admire are leaving in droves because of a tiered hierarchy that puts people of different skin color above others. Romance, like justice has a blind eye. You cheapen us all when you insult others.
Be less racist. Be better about advocating for authors of color. Be fairer and more transparent in your processes. Given the history of this organization and its most recent actions to sanction someone for speaking out about racism, , I have very little confidence it has the capacity or will to change beyond giving lip service to aims of diversity and inclusion. The black woman who founded this organization would surely be ashamed to be associate with what it has become.
The leadership of this organization is racist. When white writers complain that another member has pointed out racist tropes in their publications the organization chooses to side with the racist white writers rather than with the person pointing out the racism. It is interesting that the organization claims to be against racism when they have yet to sanction most of the white members who have published racist material.
Outstanding resources available to members and their yearly conferences are fantastic sources of information and contacts. Local chapters all over the country provide the opportunity to connect face to face with other romance authors.
I am a former member who planed to renew in 2020. That's not happening now. RWA has a) not followed their own procedures, b) operated in a very non-transparent/secretive way, c) and sanctioned an author for critiquing a book. It's not racist to call out racist elements, and the fact that we have to say this out loud means this organization has a very, very long way to go to be inclusive.
racist, homophobic trainwreck
