Rainbow Chinese Restaurant & Bar

4.2

About this business

This is possibly the finest Chinese restaurant in the Twin Cities. Family-owned and run, the Rainbow boasts time-tested recipes and a rich interior. Seafood is one of the specialties of the house, but the place does a lot for vegetarians, too. Pan-fried vegetable dumplings make the perfect appetizer. Start off with one of the many noodle soups or cashew salad. Duckling or beef with mustard greens, sliced chicken with peapods, water chestnuts and baby carrots and tempura-style prawns with broccoli and red curry sauce are high... read more

Agree with recent reviews – I agree with the recent reviews. The service and setting were adequate (not great), but the spicy dishes we ordered were bland and uninspiring. The only positive experience I can point to were the happy hour beer prices ($3 for a pint of Guiness).

Howdid itgetranked so high? – I'm from Chicago and am used to eating Chinese food in Chinatown. Now that I'm living in Minnesota I was hoping to find some good Chinese food. This is not it. I was so let down by the ranking it has. It's set up is trying to being modern/yuppy (first warning sign for bad ethnic food). Service was fine. Bottom line, food is awful, I mean did not finish my meal. I'll never go again, I my search continues for good Chinese food in Minnesota.

not that good – While the service and ambiance was fine, the food was quite disappointing. The food was rather bland, and the dishes labeled spicy (indicated by a chili pepper) were mild at best. The one exception to the poor food were the egg rolls which were exceptional, and probably the best egg rolls I have ever had. I would not recommend Rainbow unless you plan to have a meal of egg rolls.

iced water with lipstick – I ate my lunch an hour ago in Rainbow and I still feel bad taste in my mouth (literally). Not only because the food is horrible. You don't see the real difference between Hunan chicken and spicy shrimp in terms of taste. To me, every dish looks and tastes just the same. Are they "Chinese food?" Give me a break. As far as the food is concerned, it's easily one of the worst in town. If I could live with the food, something else surprised me. I was offered a glass of iced water only finding some red c... read more

GREAT TASTING CHINESE FOOD – I've been going to Rainbow since I was 7 or 8 years old and their quality of food has not changed. They have the best egg rolls and fish sauce compared to any other Chinese restaurant. They don't pack in the shredded cabbage like other restaurants do. Their garlic and ginger chicken has remained my favorite dish since I first tried it. I totally recommend this restaurant for those who like a change from the "LeAnn Chins" or "Fortune Houses." As for the people who said that Rainbow is not authenti... read more

As good as Manhattan NORTH of Houston – Unbelievably poor. If you have any desire for authentic Cantonese point your car down the street to Evergreen. Hot and sour so corn starched my fork stood up, gelatinous sauces, over-breaded salt-baked squid. I should have gotten the chop suey.

Authentic as they come! – For those that say this place is "not authentic," I beg to differ. Last month I brought my father, who was born in Taiwan, and he said that the 6 dishes that we tried reminded of when he was growing up. Sure, not every single dish on the menu is authentic, but this isn't different from every other ethnic restaurant in the cities. Beware of those that claim to know "authentic" when they have not had authentic to begin with.

Great food! – This is some of the best chinese food in town. People complaining about the price?? They are the ones used to spending $4 for chowmein at some stripmall dump. You get what you pay for and what you pay for here is great food.

Rainbow Not-Chinese Restaurant – Like most people leaving reviews here, I only need to reiterate the lack of authentic Chinese food (or good food for that matter) at this restaurant. You can have a good time anywhere...picnic tables don't get 5 stars because you "had a good time" on a picnic.
