A South Street barbecue joint that serves up Texas-sized portions. – In Short Phone in, show up or take out--this small store is strictly a pick up and go affair. Waiting for food is never boring, thanks to sports lochblaring from the television monitor. The fare is basic barbecue--brisket, pulled pork, chicken and ribs--dressed up by one of the house's two signature sauces, regular and extra hot. Topping off every meal is a piece of corn bread for dipping in or mopping up the juices.
Don't Order Ribs – I will admit that I have higher expectations for my bbq coming from Tennesee, but I found theirribs diplorable. They had too much sauce and the meat was too fatty. I have not tried the pork, but have heard better things about t them.
the best – the BEST bbq in philadelphia. the brisket is unbeatable and the sides are even better. i've been here a billion times and i'll come back a billion times more.
User review by maryleebotsaris – I have been received very nicely into the clean and organized little take-out spot of South St --- they were patient while I decided my order and the Pulled Pork sandwich was out of this world - as was the bbq'd whole chicken and the side dishes are always tasty and fresh ...... I really like the young fols in there and go back often - I truly and highly reccomend this BarB-Que place - PHOEBE"S Rocks!!!! Thank you.
Phoebe's is Number One !! – Heard of Phoebe's through word of mouth, and it was probably the best we've ever had after 35 years in Phila. The ribs were tender, substantial, and had a smoked flavor unlike any other. All that, then they slather on some really fabulous tasting sauce, too. Side items were average, but you go to a rib joint for the Ribs. Quality of the food has been consistent after several visits, unlike many places. Phoebe's definitely should be number 1!!
I'd hav to disagree with the Boston comment, I was disappointed up there. At any rate, Phoebe's is the only southwestern style BBQ I'm aware of in Philly. Their pork ribs are good and their Brisket and pulled pork are tasty as well. My only gripe is that the food isn't hot enough when its served. If its beef ribs you want though, head over to dwight's. Philly has a small number but quality bbq restaurants. I ate worse BBQ in Charleston where it's supposed to be good.
Killer Grub!! – Spiro makes some great Q! Pulled pork, pork ribs and the mac and cheese is the mac-daddy! A must have - take-out only.
Cute BBQ guys! – This is the best place for a single gal to go in search of some laughs, great pulled pork, and a few compliments. The guys are so cute and friendly, and the food is great. Take it home with a smile and a six pack, and the night is all set.
