Original Hotcake House

4.3

About this business

Huge portions of hotcakes, hash browns and burgers are what have kept this place a part of the Portland dining scene for more than 20 years. One of the more happening after-bar places to eat, the hot spot offers food that might not be too healthy, but you will not care once you indulge. The namesake hotcakes are big and fluffy. Hash browns are also good, but ask for them well done if you like them crispy. This is the perfect end to a wild night out or the start of a lazy day.

Always open, the Original Hotcake and Stake House is a staple of P-Town's late night, early morning and whenever-you-want-bacon dining scene.

A Portland landmark – When I first moved to Portland 23 years ago (has it been that long already?) I remember seeing the Hotcake House' Open 24 Hours sign and thought I gotta try that place! I have to say in 23 years neither the place, nor the good food, has changed. Probably, in part, because of the simple menu. Though the prices have increased substantially, they're not over-priced. I usually get a strawberry pancake ($4.25) and either hash browns, a fried egg or bacon on the side. The portions are big. You will never leav... read more

Cheap, hot, dive-y – Like the headline says this place is cheap, hot an dive-y. The hotcakes are good, better than you'd expect (or exactly as good as you'd expect depending on how what your experience is with 24hr hotcake establishments). Personally I usually get 2 hotcakes and an order of chicken fried steak. If you want a high class no greasy spoon kind of joint, go elsewhere. If you want good food at an affordable price that's served and made by really nice people, then this place is probably a good fit.

BIGGEST GREASEPIT IN TOWN! – The first thing I noticed when I walked into this place was that there are layers and layers of grease everywhere. Looks like they haven't cleaned in a decade. To top it off, my husband and I BOTH found thick black Hispanic hairs in our food! Disgusting! I'll never visit this dump ever again!

You have got to be kidding me! – My disabled friend and I went into this place for a breakfast in the morning. He took a seat (due to an illness that takes his strength away from him) and we were kicked out. Very bad service I am reporting them to the better business bureau. As far as I know, by law you (the restaurant) has to accommodate the disabled. Hope to see these guys get it together or be shut down. Just a heads up, dont take you disabled friends/family or your grandmas to this place. For that matter, dont take anyon... read more

Off Night? – I went there for the first time last night, I've heard good things about the place and since it wasn't to busy I decided to stop in for a hotcake. First off the guy at the register didn't look at me nor say anything for a good 2 minutes as he poked away at the register. Finally he said (without looking up) "What do you want" I just ordered one strawberry pancake and sat down, 45 minutes later my one pancake arrived with no strawberry. If it was busy I would defiantly understand, but it was not that crazy.... The... read more

I Love This Place! Funky, order at the grill old fashioned style restaurant that's a Portland institution. Legendary pancakes, 2 pancakes and a cup of coffee is an amazing start to the day, but get extra syrup! Friendly, colorful characters abound, not just as restaurant help but also as customers. Huge portions, fair prices.

Great food and great deal. – This place is delicious. Everything that i have ordered has been outstanding. The atmosphere is nice and it makes you feel welcome. The people who work there are very nice and the food is made fairly quickly.
