??Oba! Restaurante y Refresqueria opened in Portland, Oregon in October 1997. Owner Steve McLain, who had spent the 1980s managing and owning restaurants in high-profile markets such as the Bay Area and Los Angeles, had already completed a successful purchase and turnaround of Hall Street Grill in a Portland suburb ??? a restaurant that continues to thrive under his ownership today. Eager to open a second venture in a more urban setting, McLain chose the heart of the Pearl District. At the time, this gritty, industrial area ... read more

Fantastic – In order to vote, I have to write something....I am not much of one for words, so all I can say is that I highly recommend this restaurant. Sure it has the snobbish feel of the Pearl, but as long as you expect that, you'll do just fine. They didn't treat me any differently for wearing jeans and a t-shirt btw.
Well run joint – Oba continues to be one of my favorites and at the top of my restaurant list. Wonderful well executed food and service in the dining room and still a very fun and hip bar to hang at! Now that they are totally non-smoking, I can eat dinner in the bar without a gas mask. I've had two occasions to eat in their private dining room - WOW. Well done Oba!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh, so Oba-rated ! – Another overrated Pearl District restaurant. If you want to get a taste of Cuban fare, head over to Canita. True...you need to brave a scary area on Burnside, and the ambience is less polished than Oba...but if great Cuban food is what your after Canita is a better bet.
STILL GREAT! – I've been eating at Oba for the last several years, and I'm continually impressed by how it keeps getting better over time. The menu has kept some of their best items, like the crispy prawns, and I always have a hard time chosing what to eat for dinner because everything is so good! The last time I was there, I had a fantastic lemon-chipotle chicken. The bar is a fun place to have a great drink (but too busy for me on First Thursday).
Food is......ehhhh. – Oba has great service and great ambience. It's food, however, leaves something to be desired. While presented beautifully, the food is lacking in taste, especially for a Spanish themed restaurant. There is just nothing spectacular on the main menu. I've tried most of the fish dishes(quite bland) and the ribs(decent). The one thing that was out of this world was the baked alaska type dessert. I can't remember the excact name of the dish but it was awesome. I would recommend for drinks and dessert.
Awesome! – I have eaten all over the US and can say Oba is something Portland can be proud of! Very creative and varied dishes. Good wine list with everything from the high end to a handful of tasty South American reds in the twenty dollar range. Overall one of the best resteraunts in the whole NW. Simple yet elegent.
Fusion rules – Cool, hip and happening. Decor just understated enough to allow patrons' luminance to override. Did I mention cool?
i love it!! – you will love your expierience with the oba! crew. it is a welcoming and easy place to be. i have always had a pleasent expierience while dinning here!!!
what went wrong with the last ones! – I don't know what the last couple of reviewers had, or didn't have, but our experiences at Oba! have been outstanding. Most importantly, my wife loves the food and atmosphere and can totally relax here. And with 4 kids at home, thats just what she needs. So, Oba! always starts our night out right, and we know what to do to finish it all off...!!!
