Prior to the birth of my daughter in April I spoke with the hospital to see how much I would be expected to pay with my insurance. I was given an estimate of $1,600 and was told the total would not exceed $2,000. Now I have been sent surprise medical bills totalling almost $4,000. I've called the hospital repeatedly to ask for clarification and some kind of discount based on the fact that I was not made aware of these charges previously.
