I would caution anyone thinking about seeing dr Shuping. Went to her about 5 years. The most unorganized dr. I've come across in my life. My first visit she couldn't find my previous doctor's records. Her office was a mess, papers everywhere. No office staff... If you have depression and anxiety you are struggling to keep afloat, right? Over a phone call, she yelled at me so bad I had to hold the phone away from my ear. I ended up very upset feeling worse and finally I said "I can't take this anymore!!" and I hung up. She ne... read more

Dr. Shuping is the best psychiatrist I have seen, and I have seen a lot. She listens to me regarding how I am feeling and how my meds are working. She also works with my therapist when I have a hard time finding the words to explain how I am doing. I have been with her for 10 years and look forward to another 10 years under her care.

I called Dr. Shuping to ask about getting an appointment for my family member. When I called there was no indication on the phone message that I had reached the correct office so of course I did not leave a message. She called me back and was very rude on the phone to me, asking "who am I speaking to?" in a very bad tone...when I told her what our insurance was there was a long pause then she told me she would not be here during the month of September. None of my family will be going to her!

Business response:

I work part-time at my practice because I also travel to teach continuing ed. for MD's, RN's, & Counselors. When you called, I was scheduled to teach for many days of classes in TX, GA, and PA. When I have teaching scheduled, I block out time in my schedule not only for travel, but also for time for preparation for teaching & there is no time for new pts. It was best for you to see a different MD than to wait a long time to see me. For privacy, I had to be sure it was you and not other person.

Dr. Shuping was rude and unwilling to listen to my hesitation about a drug she was putting me on. Her office is gross and she is unprofessional in her dress as well as demeanor. The drug she wanted to put me on wasn't covered by my insurance and would cost around $500 a month so I didn't want to go on it and instead of trying to find another option, she told me I was wasting her time if I wasn't willing to try her advice. Would not recommend.

Business response:

Some insurance companies don't pay for meds that are best. I normally provide free samples of new meds so you can try them. IF a new, costly medication works, and insurance charges a ridiculous copayment, many drug companies provide FREE meds for those who are low or moderate income when insurance covers poorly. My patients do not pay 500 dollars for meds I prescribe. But if a patient prefers treatment that I believe to be harmful or not helpful, it is best for the patient to choose another M.D.

First off I love Dr. Shuping, and she is one of the best physicists in NC. The problem I have is getting in touch with somebody in her office to either change my appointment, and reschedule a new one. Or if you have medication questions. I can call and leave a message 3,or 4 times in a week time before I get a returned call. I just wish they would fix their customer service end of the business.

Business response:

This is a small practice with only 1 M.D., and staffed for patients whose needs are less acute. Some agencies with high volumes of patients have a large staff to answer phone calls. Patients who often have needs between appointments would do best with a larger agency. Usually an appointment change is not an emergency, and if Dr. Shuping is away teaching continuing education classes to other professionals, routine non-urgent administrative matters may be deferred until her return.

I have been a patient of Dr. Shuping for almost 21 years. She has always been a great listener. She has helped me understand my illness and has helped me learn to cope with many of life's obstacles. I would recommend her to anyone.
