This Italian trattoria caters to a young, attractive downtown crowd, but one that appreciates good food as much as a hip scene. Lupa is co-owned by celebrity chef Mario Batali and restaurateur Joe Bastianich, also partners in Esca and Babbo Ristorante e Enoteca. The waiters at Lupa are knowledgeable about the food, and prices are surprisingly moderate. Signature dishes range from home-cured Mortadella to excellent pasta. The front room is casual, and the back area romantic. The restaurant only takes a limited number of reser... read more

Bread plate is fab, the spicy black pasta is a must, and the kale Caesar (not really a Caesar - grapefruit?) is also pretty good
The food, from appetizers, to entrees, to sides, to desserts, are all stellar. The service is also excellent. Smart dress is better. Casual okay, but you'll stick out.
Variety of cuisine The atmosphere here is really nice, so if you're looking for a romantic evening out, try Lupa. The wine list is fantastic and the food was very tasty. The restaurant reminded me of something you'd find in an Italian mob movie. Has wonderful character!
Lupa-The She Wolf gets it right We are just back from Rome and where we have essentially ate our way across the city, so going to an Italian restaurant in New York is definitely taking our chances. BTW, there is no bad pasta in Rome, but there is terrible Pizza. Lupa, the she wolf, symbol of Rome, is wonderful bistro, on Thompson Street, nyc, that gets it right. The waiters are extremely knowledgeable, (do you know the difference between Borsci and Lucano digestifs) and are actually helpful, rare in New York. Appetizers are ... read more
Decent but not quite what I expected I love Otto and was excited to try one of Mario Battali's more upscale places. Sad to say I was kind of disappointed by Lupa. The portions felt small and the service a bit uptight. Otto seems more innovative to me. Also the back room is really crowded.
2nd Favorite Mario Restaurant This is our second favorite Mario restaurant (behind Otto). We actually first discovered this on advice of our nephew (who lived in New York; we live in Utah). Lots of diversity here and a superb wine list. Plan on waiting a bit. After dinner, skip dessert and walk around the block to the east (Laguardia Street) and get dessert at the Bruno Bakery.
Cacio e Pepe, prosciutto, parpadelle
The food is delicious, of course, and the wine too. It's a bustling little spot and best for a party of 3 or 4. If you're only 2, then you risk being sat with another group of 2.
Hmm I'm disappointed. The food is fine though definitely nothing special but the kitchen/service was extremely slow... And there were only 4-5 parties other parties..
