Just Beautiful – This is a very stylish Japanese restaurant. The high ceilings, the bar scene, the cozy lounge at the right side of the entrance and finally the sushi bar at the end of the dinning room makes your dining experience unique. Great presentation. Food knowledge of your wait staff made our selection easier since the menu can be a little to complex to understand. Don't forget to bring a thick wallet since it's pricey...Oh it's worth every penny. good luck..I recommend Japonais anytime.

Great Sushi – Can't comment on the rest of the menu, but I was really impressed with the sushi. Waitress was also very helpful and knowledgeable.

pretty good – great ambiance, a young trendy crowd. made a 10:30 sat night reservation for dinner, did not get seated until 10:50. My friend and I expressed our dismay at being seated so late (nicely though of course) and host offered to buy us appetizer and dessert. We opted to order a glass of wine, 3 veggie rolls and a salmon maki roll and spicy mono roll. My friend is vegetarian. I loved the spicy mono and salmon, but the veggie rolls were very lackluster. The host knocked off $26 from the bill, so we got our small dinne... read more

Welcome to new york – Japonais in Chicago is one of my favorite places in that city. I found it very Nobu-like with alot of unique dishes. When Japonais opened in NYC I was thrilled. Although not as good as Chicago, I think in time it will get the kinks out. The sushi is fresh and there are some creative dishes. I do think they can get a better sushi staff though, on the level of Nobu, or Gari . The decor is excellent, reminds me a little of Sushi Roku in Santa Monica, maybe because they both have the "rock" ,,but Roku uses ... read more

Unimpressive – I went here to celebrate a friend's birthday and found the food to be mediocre at best. Firstly they seated three people at a table for two, with another table 6 inches from ours. They couldn't even fit our food on the table. The food was outrageously expensive for what it was. Don't get me wrong. I have no problem shelling it out for quality, but this place was not worth it.

Forget reviews Sushi is very good! – I can't understand the reviews that said stay away from the Sushi. I went with a large party and we almost skipped the sushi because of the reviews. Because we all love sushi,we decided to try only two rolls to share for the entire table. We had to order three more they were sooo good. Do not be discouraged if it is sushi you want. I would say everything was good and the sushi is up there with other notable places and way better than Buddha Bar(not saying much). Also, service was very goo... read more

Excellent all around. Would highly recommend! – A friend and I had the best experience at Japonais. We went on a weeknight without reservations just looking for a place to chill, get a few drinks and some appetizers. We were totally dressed down but didn't stop the host from being incredibly courteous. We proceeded upstairs to the lounge because we didn't have a reservation and were seated immediately. Our waitress was attentive and very charming (not to mention cute!). Our drinks were excellent, as was the food (pork buns, ... read more

Fun Date Spot in the Lounge – Went with a girlfriend on Friday night, and sat in the lounge upstairs without having a reservation or wait. That was nice. Drinks are typical (Asian inspired martinis, etc), and the food is h it/miss: lobster spring rolls (boring, I'd rather have a burrito), tuna flatbread (one of the highlights of the night! must get), crab cakes (typical), eight samurai tartare (8 different kinds of tartare that come on 8 appetizer spoons; the octopus and scallop was good, but the ebi was just gross. like mus... read more

Not entirely on target foodwise, but a really cool atmosphere... – I've read that some people have a "been there, done that" philosophy around the whole high style Asian fusion thing, but I really dig it. The decor, the hip music, the attractive staff were all in abundance, and really made me glad we had chosen it for dinner. That being said, I think the food quality at Japonais did not meet the expectations that places like Buddakan and Morimoto have set in my mind. "The Rock", a signature dish at Japonais was excellent, th... read more
