Excellent Fresh Sushi, Wonderful Lounge, Great Drinks – Although a bit expensive, Japonais is a wonderful restaurant to enjoy very fresh sushi and relax over wonderful drinks. The dining room is beautiful yet we prefer the lounge to eat, drink and relax. In total, a great spot.
Hollow Masquerade – ended up waiting at the bar although we had a reservation. the bartender recommended edamame that had no flavors and was way too hot when served that almost burned my hand. thanks for warning us. ordered Gimlet and Manhattan, $12 each, ... that was a total B.S. didn't even look right. so ordered beer instead. i was about to reflesh my mouth and noticed the glass was not even clean. I wouldn't say much if it was a sports bar near by my house. Finally, got seated and started ordering. i thought "Kana Nigiri... read more
Great Ambiance - Terrible Food!!! – I sat with friends in the lounge and ordered almost everything on the hot/cold app menu because we kept hoping they'd get something right! The sushi rice was dry and crumbly... The chicken was fatty... The crab app was overcooked... The madai was flaky and flavorless... The edamame was no better than the take-out place around the corner from where I live. What's the deal??? Aside from the beautiful decor, I just don't understand how this restaurant can make it in this city. There are so ma... read more
Good food but unoriginal – Celebrated a birthday with friends here recently and had an overall pleasant experience. The cocktails were good but pricey. Service was ok, our waiter seemed unenthusiastic about anything on the menu. As for the food, we loved the mono and tuna tuna rolls. The buns were not worth it but other dishes like the grilled hamachi and bass were delicious. The food is pricey and not original in any way but still make for a good dinner out-especially if on an expense account!
Too many good restaurants to waste your time here – I have never written a review before but my experience at Japonais has compelled me to write one in order to warn others. My boyfriend and I had friends in town from London and decided to take them to Japonais (my boyfriend goes there often but this was my first time). When we arrived for our resi the place was packed and the hostess desk was in complete mayhem. My boyfriend went to check us in and they yelled at him for being 10 min late (it took us at least 5 to get to th... read more
bad service – Great food. Overpriced for the size of the portions. Worst service I've experienced in all of NYC. We were seated 1 hr after our reservation, while we were mislead to believe we would be seated at any moment & told rudely to "be patient". Our waiter didn't know to fill both water glasses, not just the one of the "pretty" girl. And, finally, our waiter advised that when going to restaurants like "Japonais", one knows to expect an hour wait for a table, even with reservations. Duh! I should've known.
one of the best – This has to be one of the better dining experiences that I have had in NYC! The food was extremely fresh and well presented. The staff was very attentive but not obtrusive during our meal. It is definitely not for someone on a budget, I'd say it's a bit overpriced actually, but it is one restaurant that should not be missed.
Welcome Addition – Despite being another "big box, zen-centric, LA scene-y" restaurant, I had a great time here. I've been back a few times to try different items and have little to complain about. The servers have all been very knowledgeable and accomodating, with prompt service to top it off. Dishes, although not significantly original are very good, especially the kobe beef prepared at your table on a bed of hot rocks. The shrimp trio appetizer was good, although the 3 sauces could've been spicier, they were fairly plain ... read more
Don't bother--not worth it! – Went for a friend's birthday with a group of 12. They sat us upstairs in the lounge, where we had a teeny table which was at our knees. The appetizers were good and the sushi was nothing special. When we got the bill, it was wrong--they overcharged us for 3 bottles of sake we didn't order. After they fixed it and we handed them back the bill, our waitress informed us that they could only take 4 credit cards (which they failed to inform us when we made the reservation)! It was absolutely absurd. ... read more
