Despite Bad Reviews, Great innovative menu – I havent been there in a bit but i went 3 times since it opened and had the exact opposite experience of all the bad reviews. the wagyu ravioli is sublime and the entree was presented with exquisite preciseness. the decor is great but i can imagine why the service may have sucked for some. the management there is a bit top heavy from what i heard and the servers arent compensated well. (i heard from some staff members) i heard the group is from chicago and they probably havent con... read more

Nothing Special – avoid to order "anna-maria". it' doesn't have enough to eat and is not tasty at all. i think it should be taken off from the menu long time ago.

Good food - poor service - poor value – Trendy and smart decor but the terrible service does not make up for the atmosphere. The wait staff is inexperienced. We asked for water from three staff and never received it. The food is good but overpriced for what is good New York sushi. We also had to wait 15 minutes for the waiter to bring back the credit card and check. Many many more place to get good / trendy sushi in New York... Try Haru across the street.

Trendy Ambiance, Fresh food, Semi-slow service – The first thing you notice about Japonais is the decor - it has a beautiful, trendy ambiance that is good for a date or a girls' night out and the like. My date and I opted to do tapas-type dining and ordered several appetizers to share... A review of a couple: "The rock" was delicious - and grilling your own meat to your liking on a hot stone was a novel experience! We ordered the oysters, very fresh - and they provide three sauces for them. The carpaccio was very good as wel... read more

Go to Japonais to get ripped off! – I have been to Japonais for dinner twice. I live in Manhattan and I eat out every night. I have no problem with expensive meals. But I always feel ripped off when I eat at Japonais. Maybe it's the waiters, who have been trained to annoyingly badger you to order more drinks. or it's the $20 glass of Sake. Or the fact that my friend asked for a piece of bread with his Tuna Tartare, and he was changed $2 for it. Japonais would be a great restaurant if the prices were 40% cheaper. At the prese... read more

Fabulous for sceney NYC dining – I visited Japonais on a Friday night with a group of four friends and it was fabulous. If you're looking for a vibey, buzzy beautiful location to dine I'd really reccommend it. Also would be really good for a date location (if you like the person as its not exactly Wendy's) as the surrounds are very ONO-esque and the interiors are saucy to say the least (lots of low level lighting, reds and golds etc) Food was great, try the Lobster Spring Rolls as a starter as they're great! Vist or be sorry... read more

Great vibe, sushi and martinis – My girlfirend has been raving about this place so I had to try it. It was a perfect way to start out a Saturday night. Great vibe in the upstairs lounge they played great techno music. The martinis were excellent and so was the food. I really ejoyed the Alaskan Crab rolls. The staff was wondeful the hostess sent over two Martinis on the house. I would definitely return.

SWEET STUFF! – My best friend and I went here on a Thursday evening for drinks and apps. We both had mojitos which were absolutely delicious. We had some maki rolls and the tuna flatbread- which was delicious. The sushi is just sub-par, I did not find it tasty and the rice did not taste authentic. The lounge upstairs boasts a delightful evening. The orange lighting on the walls combined with deep reds started to hurt my eyes after awhile. I would probably go back there for drinks.
