While they don't win top marks on anything, everything they do ranges from adequate to great. Bagels are good, and you can get cheap day-olds as well. Donuts are better than most, and the apple fritters are huge. Seasonal cookies and pies are the standouts. And their ham egg and swiss on an ET bagel is exactly what you want.
Frankly, I only get the donuts. I only get them when they are freshly made and they are killer. Massive, sugary, and fried. So bad for you so they are clearly awesome. Seriously if you dont like sweet donuts do not get these. They are overloaded with sugary glaze, covered in piles of frosting, too decadent for normal people.
All i got to say is this place is ridonkulous! Turkey bacon crossaint...silly!
Five Stars for Heller's Cake Donut (and only the cake donut). I'm a self confessed donut addict--so trust me I've tried most of the other donuts in the case. The others can be flabby, stale, and bland and just too big to be enjoyed. But the cake donut is delightful. The inside is pure heaven and the outside is crusty and coated in sugary coating that BEGS to be dunked in your coffee (not Heller's coffee--it is still crappy and inconsistent). But take your treasure home and enjoy it with your coffee. Neurons will fire and you... read more
Only had the doughnuts... but the best doughnuts I've ever had. Light and fluffy on the inside with a little bit of crisp on the outside. Nice amount of frosting (glaze and chocolate).
Went there yesterday morning for a little morning bite and a cup of coffee. I had a regular house coffee and a egg, cheese, and turkey bagel. The coffee was really excellent and my breakfast bagel was awesome. Not too cruncy, or big, or drippy. It was really perfect and AWESOMELY priced! All of that for less than 5 bucks! A joy to have in my neighborhood
We have gone to Hellers for several years, their lunch offering are surprisingly good, gyros and chicken salad are especially yummy and their salads are very good too. Their cookies are just so-so, but they make a really good croissant with ham and cheese and their iced coffee is super good, plus they have soy milk! The front of the space has been redone recently, they have great new colors inside and there is a lot more seating, like the new windows as well, it is much brighter now.
Hellers, I will never forget you. I have not had a chance to visit you since 2008, but if I ever make it back to D.C. you will be my first stop. The bagels. Specifically the everything bagel. Perfectly seasoned. 5 stars. The chocolate croissant. Everyday. Sometimes twice. I was in D.C. for 5 days and made 5 breakfast trips to Hellers. I could NOT help myself. Great prices don't hurt either.
The neighborhood bakery that DC so desperately needs. A touch of blue-collar and a touch of bourge cafe house, this joint provides ample variety and good all around baking. 1. Croissants - highly recommended - choc. , almond and cheese are awesome. Spinach pastry is also briliant - larger and to the left of choc. croissants. 2. Bagels - great when warm in the morning but older batches tend to lose softness. Good on their own but better with bacon, egg and cheese. 3. Bread - Organic bread with some great choices - have really... read more
