Melt N your mouth/fall apart N your chopsticks?! – This is one classic example which I was completely misled by the reviews here! Went to Echigo after I read the raving reviews and a thumbs-up recommendation from a friend; I have to tell you, I was a little disappointed. While the waitresses were attentive and the fish was fresh (but on the chincy side), I just couldn't understand why the rice would keep falling apart right in front of my eyes! After reading other reviews, apparently it didn't only happen to me, so it wasn't... read more
User review by siddhartha53 – I am no connoisseur of sushi, but this is by far the best I have ever tasted. Sitting at the bar for chef's choice is definitely the way to go; you will spend $30+ per, but you have the opportunity to watch a master at work. If you have fish like this available to you, I can't imagine why anyone would want to cook it!
Our favorite – We've known Toshi for 13 years, and we feel very happy and proud on his accomplishment in bringing such high quality and service to the west side.
i agree – I agree with the last poster. echigo is my favorite sushi place by far. i love that everything is on little plates and everything tastes so fresh and delicious. i like the warm rice and i even like the quiet simple atmosphere. its a great place to talk to someone, sip some beer, and have fantastic sushi.
One of the best in LA – I have to take issue with reviews by people who apparently know nothing of sushi. The wasabe is soft because it's fresh. The sushi is served one tray at a time because that's they way they serve it. It's warm-rice sushi and has some of the most amazing cuts of fish on it you'll find, period. I've had barracuda and flying fish sushi there! There is little to no ambiance, but face it, you're there for the food--and it is amazing. Oh, and they have an $11 lunch special which can't be beat.
substandard – The fish is fresh, but it's a thin sliver on a large, over-vinegared ball of almost hot overcooked rice. It also made me feel uncomfortable that the waitress had to walk out each piece of sushi to me one at a time. I just felt bad for her.
One of the best sushi in LA. – I've been here a couple of times, and every visit has been wonderful. If you don't want to spend crazy monies on omakases, this is the place for you, it comes out to less than $40/person. From the outside, it looks like any japanese rest. but to my surprise, the sushi is 10x better than the way it looks. Compared to Sasabune, this is just the same, but cheaper! Sushi Tenn can't even compare. The baby tuna/toro is awesome! Whatever the sushi master gives you, just eat it!
Melts in your mouth – I'm not joking when i say this sushi melts in your mouth. It's THAT GOOD. Compared with sushi in Japan, this is neck & neck. Once you try this, you can kiss your favorite sushi restaurants goodbye!
I can't understand the negative reviews! – My wife, daughter and I have been to Echigo at least 50 times! I have NEVER experienced anything but the best sushi and superior service. It's a wonderful place to go if you realize that it's minimalist decor and menu are integral parts of its appeal. It's especially good for its Chef's Choice (Omakasi) menus; and yet they will allow additions and substitutions.
Echigo has a 4.6 star rating with 251 reviews.
