I often remind my patients that even though I am a surgeon, I am also a patient. I understand full well when any patient is apprehensive about a needed surgery because I as a patient would (and have) felt the same way. My care philosophy is based on the simple idea that the care I offer my patient is the same I would want offered to my family member or to myself. In general, the smaller the operation that can be used to solve the problem, the better.

Dr Benalcazar operated on my back for a cyst that was located inside my spinal canal. He is a wonderful surgeon and I no longer have the intense pain in my lower back. I am a critical care nurse of 43 years and highly recommend this fine physician.
Had a compression fracture in lower spine, sent to physical therapy and pain management for 7 months. Finally fused it, developed another condition because of rods, was told by 3 neurosurgeons to have rods removed. He refused to do it. Had them removed by another Dr. No wonder he didn't want to remove them, one had a large sharp edge that should have been filed off so it wouldn't stick me and cause more pain constantly!!
So incompetent and so arrogant - all about the money, his surgical procedure had to be corrected by a better surgeon who did NOT have an attitude. Benalcazar was unable to correctly diagnose the issue resulting in over a year of unnecessary pain (and he is responsible for the death of a friend's father due to his misdiagnose and arrogance. He is the neurosurgeon in Upper Chesapeake - go somewhere else AVOID this person!!!!!
I had back pain for three years with multiple diagnosis and it was not until I went to Dr. Benalcazar that I got the right one. Thank you Dr. Benacazar for your expertise and your great staff. I had surgery on my back and have not had any pain since then. My dog is grateful also, I can take him on long walks again.
I have seen Dr. Benalcazar for several problems. He performed my left & right carpal tunnel surgeries, my left ulnar release surgery, a C5-C6 fusion, and most recently a bilateral SI fusion. These were all issues that have bothered me for 10+ yrs. I did P/T and pain management with medication and multiple injections. Relief was always temporary. Dr. Benalcazar was about fixing the problems causing my pain. He is very attentive and showed real empathy for my situation. He is a no BS kind of doctor. He explained what could be ... read more
seems more concerned about making money. the staff is mediocre at best. I had to remind them about what tests and when they needed it done. none of them truly seem to understand the significance of these life changing surgeries. put off surgery after seeing the level of confusion.sad.
Dr B was very knowledgeable and up front with my condition and the aftercare was good. I had no problem with him after talking about residual pain which I expected. Some issues of swallowing were never discussed up front which bothered me just a little. Answered all my questions. Use of the patient portal were okay, but some initial questions went unanswered, but other staff filled in the gaps. The only bad thing was the appointments and them running up to two hours behind schedule which can be affected by surgeries, but I f... read more
The doctors are always late. The staff behind the desks are allowed to amek too many medical decisions without asking the physician first. Some of them are very rude. However, the surgeon is an excellent surgeon who completely solved my back issues with the surgery he suggest. Although I am still very uncomfortable from the procedure (post op complications which the dr. could not prevent), he did a great job. He was kind and understand ing when I went in to get my staples removed. I saw the doctor only, no PA's.
The man as a surgeon is brilliant, but his availability and office staff leave something to be desired. What do you expect? If you are going to trust someone with the surgery that could cure or cripple you, deal with the inconvenience. I only care what he can do in the operating room. He's extremely popular because he is the best around. So you might have to wait for an appointment, he's worth it.
